They need to be visible to their victim.
It is seriously frustrating being killed by the attack helo from outside the visible distance when it is right above me. i can hear it but cant see it and i have maximum view distance set in game. now i know for a fact that the real cobra has a maximum service ceiling of 3,475m and i know for a fact that i can easily see one at that altitude. perhaps it should be done so that it either has a limited range on weapons so that it has to come into viewable range or it could be rendered from further out or it has a limited service ceiling to that which can bee seen from the ground in game. either way, this is something that needs sorting, for the " reality" of the game. |

Combined Arms is trying out the concept you mention, all weapons have a range at which they expire
Its a valid point, though I prefer the current PR way of doing it and accepting view distances as a game limitation. However there is something to be said for those range weapons HOWEVER the best fix imo, is removal of attack markers placed by the SL (only visible on the map rather than the game world) so that blind firing is no longer possible with pinpoint accuracy, you'll have to get a spotter if you wanna do that stuff |

Its a fair tactic by all means especially on maps like Muttrah that can have an insane amount of AA. However, the only way for BVR to work well if for there to be a spotter, so your means of countering it is trying to kill their spotter, or you know, actually take cover. | |

I don't think you have a good grasp of how far 3475m is. That is over two miles, you wouldn't be able to see anything at that distance without the aid of optics. And in the real world the sky is a really big thing and it would be hard for a human to even get a general idea of where to point his binoculars to look. Plus at that distance the sound of the cobra would be distorted and be hard to trace.
Just looked this up, FAS puts the max service ceiling of a AH1W at 14,750 feet which is roughly 4,500 meters. http://www.fas.org/programs/ssp/man/...specifications |

Nevermind that the odds of the Cobra being directly above you are small...so he might be, say, five or six kilometers away.
Actually, the typical engagement ranges in PR are unrealistically short if I recall correctly, but the view distance can't really be increased a lot more. |

And if you shoot straight down with any gun.... the projectile won't just disappear after some distance... its going down.

the max service ceiling of the "super" cobra is around 4k, but that is moving, the hover ceiling is around 3.5k.
I know only to well range and distance, i was a gunner in the RA for 6 years. I also know how far i can see, i know that at 3k i can see an airborne target, all be it a small dot, i still get a visual ref, but in PR/BF the visual range is non existent, one min you see the helo, the next it is a white shadow, then it is gone, but the helo still gets a clear view of the ground target without BVR. so i suggest these idea's to bring it into the realms of reality like the rest of the sim. Its not a bitch or a whine, just a suggestion to relieve the frustration AH-1 Cobra Marine Corps Fact File - AH-1W Super Cobra Helicopter AH-1F Aircraft Gallery # 1 Militia Museum of NJ - AH-1F Cobra Attack Helicopter |
