Knives. Do we really need them?

The knife IS important. How the hell are you going to kill of a sniper and his spoter?

A: You shoot the sniper. The spoter hears the gunfire and kills you
Alternative: You shoot the sniper. The spoter hears you and turns to fire on you but you kill him too. Now about 2 squads in the area come looking for what they expect a squad behind enemy lines. Wooptydoo. What a great way to die.

B: You knife the sniper/spoter. While over VOIP all he says is "WTF?!?" you kill the other guy. Move on. No one hears you, no one notices you.

I disagree with knifing feet not killing. Sometimes it's not posible to move up to the head of the guy you want to knife (he's prone and his head is on the edge of the building).

I think they really waste a weapon slot, but they shouldn't be removed because we need some protection when out of ammo. Would be a lot better though if we could use the rifle for melee attacks, like in many other FPS games. Is it possible without wasting a weapon slot?

Is it possible to have the rifle have 2 "CLICKS" for no more ammo, and then it would automaticly bash. BASH BASH! Or stab with a bayonette, you know, if you dont have time for reloading.

What happends to me alot, is spraying alot in Close quarter, then i use my pistol, and then noone is covering me. And i dont have time to reload, so i take my knife out. It works.

We could switch the shovel? So it would be a Building and stabbing device, i mean ive heard countless times people going on about how they would kill me with their shovel, then bury me with it...?

Alternate weapon functions like melee attacks are not possible as far as we know in BF2.

I could live without the knife if it means something good was brought in to replace it.

it would also make supplies more important.

Personally i'd like a melee attack that could also open doors

I don't think knife is really needed in PR besides that without it it would be much harder to destroy RP's and FB's. Plus removing the knife would maybe discourage players from sneaking up somewhere where there's alot of enemy and knifing them all. And it's not really realistic how in CQB situations players run around like maniacs to knife someone. Never seen/heard of any soldier in modern days running into enemy territory with a knife.

well, bayonets maybe. But with the engine limitation that we cannot have shooting and knifing on the same weaponslot, would be best to remove it all.

though on INS....can't arrest without. hmmm

I say remove it only and ONLY if you really need a slot for something very very usefull and vital. Since the #1 thing you must have is your rifle, but #2 what you must always carry with yourself is a knife (not in every day life on the streets, though it is welcome as long as you don't start killing people).

I mean, if you lack the skill and don't want to risk taking out someone with the knife so no one would hear that and you'd still have the element for surprise for a short while then by all means don't. But don't make it so other people who are able to do so couldn't either.

That's a valuable asset really. Once on ghost train we lost temple (damn brits took it back) and were going for the next flag. They left 1 squad behind. So me and another guy went down and knifed the squad and "dug in". The ones that left didn't know what happened until the flag was lowered and half of our team was already there in defence (much better then trying to break through a bunch of enemies eh?)

Unless it gets replaced by something really awesome, I want the knife to stay. I can't imagine any military force not giving their soldiers hand to hand combat training, and the knife is a good way to represent this.

And like others have said already, the knife serves more purposes than just killing.
