I know it's not a valid option for distance, but if the bullets all hit in a vertical line, that means you can aim for the feet and hit the two last ones in the chest.
Shouldn't it be more of a shotgun-esque effect? Where the first shots hit where you aim, and the other ones hit around that shot. |

The recoil usually causes it to climb a little bit. But believe me, this is supposed to happen, I've fired an M16 on burst. I'm by no means an expert marksman, but I was able to fire much more accurately than the guys in this game, at ranges as out as 75m. But I've never shot in a combat situation.

I thought the guys over at the Insurgency team did a good job with their M16's.

if you want to hit far w/ three round burst, shoot near the feet=P
any rifle is going to recoile, so every bullet is going to be above the fist |
