Or,

what might work is, 2 different weapon modes, kind of what we have on the automatic rifleman.
Like pressing 1 = normal, and 2 = for ground attack, with a waiting time, simulating the time that it will take to rotate the pods.

Or make the pods animate, but that's more work.. If it can be done.

The problem is more with PR helicopters tendency to uber accelerate into the ground when you dive, which is not realistic.

But tbh, I think most runs are done on the move, you never want to be hovering.

I put the hydra on rotational bundles. You press shift and they begin to rotate downwards. When you let go they go back up. I don't know the official range of motion the articulated pylons have. Alex never got back to me on that.

To get the reticule to aim right you can do one of three things:
1 - Move the pilot's camera in synchronization with the pylons which is extremely easy to do but makes piloting a bit weird if you hold the pylons down while flying.
2 - Set the reticule as a compass in the hud and move it with the pylons. I haven't done this so it is only theoretical. The issue with this is what you link the compass node to. The only one would be vehicleturretangle but that might pick up the gunner's turret instead or have glitchy movement.
3 - Put a crosshair mark on the hud that let's you know where to aim when the turret is at maximum depression.
that sound cool

using that or ammo linked weapons with differing views would be great actually

Not necessarily at all
How about in those videos of them hovering and shooting the pods off in salvos. Hell my dad's company BAE Systems was working on an attachment to the Hydras to make them guided missiles!

In real life the pilot can control the gun, hellfire, and hydra. I say leave it to the pilot to control the hydra.

Binding it to shift to rotate works better than two weapons. Depending upon the rotation speed you can get it to fire between min and max depression. It's also easier to control while flying.

Here's my question:

In real life, who controls the Hydras? The pilot or the gunner?

(Waits for Eddie or Bob or Thermis)

... Can't both of them control them if needed? Or are you talking about most of the time. I'd be interested in this, though could someone show me how the shift tilting works?

They both can do whatever the other does. However one seat is better setup for a particular role than the other.

In the apache, pilot and gunner can control any weapon they want.
