i asked my armourer and he told me the reason because some of the rifle's in the armoury had the new handles and some had the old what he said was the one's with the old handguard are the converted A1's but the ones with the new handguard where build as A2's there for go new stock put on them.

Me thinks someones telling porkie pies...... The manufacturing facility where the L85/L86 was made was closed down YEARS ago. Aint no way they built L85A2/L86A2 from new

bullock, we are talking about the hand guard, not the cocking handle. The only external differences between the A1 and A2 are indeed the 'peardrop' cocking handle (instead of A1's round one), the H&K stamp on the top of the butt (on the A2), the change in mags (A2 uses different blank firing mags to live, and both are now made of heavier, stronger metal) and a new Blank Firing Attachment (when fitted). If you want to get anal the VISABLE part of the gas plug is meant to be black on an A2 also, although eager recruits think it's carbon and scotchbrite the f**k out of them until they're silver again

).

The conversion process completed more than 18 months ago, although a number of A1s are kept in Recruit Training Centres so they don't polish the hell out of the black gas parts of the A2s.

your right they no longer build the A2's in that plant and for that matter dont build any more new A2's but the MOD did order brand new A2's which where never build as A1's the armourer
showed me the diffence's such as on the trigger guard on the converted A1's there is 2 tac welds on the newer ones there isnt also the converted ones have the serial number printed on them twice and the newer one only has it the once.

and i was talking about the handguard not the cocking handle.

but i still think the SA80 would have looked far cooler looking like this
