Well, if they were on a patrol in an occupied area, it's a possibility, but they also defend the perimeter of installations and do convoy escort.

I say again, why would MPs be involved in major combat operations.

The front lines don't always stay where you want them too, just ask the MPs who were in Korea. If MPs start taking fire from a position, they're going to counterattack.
