Default Dynamic lighting and Day/Night cycle

This could be asking a little too much from a mod which is focusing on the realism of weapons, but this is a little request which could also add to the fun of the game.

Basically, I think maps should have a day/night cycle. Joint Operations pulled it off, and I definately think it would add character to a Battlefield 2 game. I mean, what could be more exciting and fun that leading your team around in the dark, one of you with a flash-light, and as it's of course Modern Warfare here, not pre 1980, Night vision and Infra red goggles for Spec ops troops.

Now, heres the fun part. Imagine your taking cover behind a warehouse, firing at shapes in the distance, being scared to death as you cannot tell what is going on. Your a standard assault guy, so you don't have Night vision or Infra-red and you don't have a flash-light, the guy carrying it in your team, is dead. You and the commander are the last two people alive in the fire-team, and you cannot see anything. All of a sudden a jeep rolls bye, with a spot-light on the back. Your found, and all of a sudden, all hell breaks loose, flares go off in the distance, your commander launches a flare gun into the sky and choppers with main-beams streak by. Surrounded.

Now, that to me just seems awesome. To have active night-combat with flares, tactical spot-lights and action all in a night-time environment, opening up all kinds of possibilities. This is an example set-up for a time-cycle for day/night.

15 minutes, Dawn/Sunrise.
30 minutes, Daylight
15 minutes, Afternoon
30 minutes, Nightime

Perhaps shortened, because I can't see many maps lasting 1 hour and a half, but maybe some specialist epic maps could be made, just to cater for long drawn out uber battles. Hope you enjoyed

I agree but not. It would definantly add to the gameplay however its not entirely realistic. BTW isn't Night vision standard equipment to all infantry?

^ i think its an amazing idea! i made a night map for css just because its so much fun!

^^ special forces could be equipped with nightvision! why not.
but i do think every troop even the ones who have nightvision should have a little torce (nothing that goes to far but just somthing)

somone in another post mentioned about vehicles to load up off too. so when night comes you could then re-equippe with night stuff.

i believe that yes all infantry troops in at least the US army/marines have night vision, i would assume that countries like germany and the UK have nightvision for their troops as well. as for day night cycle i think it should be more of a night map/day map instead of an hour cycle, thats not realistic and would just get annoying, the map should either be dawn, day, dusk or night, maybe one map can have a dawn, day, dusk and night version, i just dont like the idea of a cycle, but thats just me.

one thing i can agree with you about, and fully agree at that, is having flares flashlights (for armies like the MEC (hopefully terrorists in PR) that dont have nightvison and infa red equipment for units where they apply would be cool. night maps are always fun.

We're not just focusing on the realism and authenticity of the weapons.

Not sure about the dynamic lighting capabilities of the BF2 engine since I don't have the game yet. I'm all for twilight and night maps, but a full light cycle would be going a bit overboard I think. Just changing from twilight to day or night during a round could be interesting enough.

And yes, the use of parachute flares, star clusters, illumination rounds and other items would provide an extremely dynamic and intense atmosphere.

As for night vision capabilities for infantrymen (be they image intensification or thermal imaging), it isn't just limited to special operations forces. But your peripheral vision is nonexistant with NVGs. I can only imagine having to try and drive or pilot an aircraft wearing them, just thr thought of even riding in a vehicle while wearing NVGs makes me nauseous.

i guess a change from dusk to night would be cool, as long as it changes realistically, maybe servers with upwards of a thousand tickets youd be able to see the change easier. as long as the changing doesnt hinder gameplay itd be cool. as for the lighting i cant comment cause i am running a geforce 5500, which isnt even supposed to run it, so i have no lighting,

broken arrow i commend you for making het comment about oyur Nvidea 5500, because when i go back to college ill be playing BF2 on my computer..which has a 5500, ive been too scarred to put BF2 on that computer fearing that it wouldnt run, so whew!

i think twilight/night, dawn/day maps would be awsome, im not sure how you would go about making a map like that, im guessing the sky dome would slowly change sky dome A to sky dome B. But the use of flares flashlights and NVG would be awsome, i could imagine most pilots would have a hard time flying vehicles, so that would add something.

if it is possible, i think vehicles should have headlights that you can turn on and off that way oyu can sneak up on the enemy, well, they can HEAR you, but not see you.

This thought also puts this idea in my head. You and your squad are all packed into a blackhawk, you have the terrain totally memorized the black hawk lands behind of a building about 50 meters from the CP, your troops sprint to it take it over, all of the sudden gunshots are wildly going off and you hear yelling in russain, an officer shouting orders, your sniper sets up some clay mores, and your spec ops sets up c4, your eng has already laid mines around the area, you guys haul back to the blackhawk and as you guys are taking off to capture another point you hear the explosions of mines and claymores, job well done =)

Not exactly sure what falls under that exact category in video, but the lighting effects are very nice. Explosions lighting things around it (I think), muzzleflashes light up sorrounding survaces, etc. Its cool looking into a building window and seeing the room light up. You know theres a firefight going on in it.
