At the beginning of the round, I turn my squad into a load of 5 worthless AI controlled characters. What I mean by that is I turn into a strict asshole. I promise to you, this will set them straight, and it works better than anything.
at 1:20, approximately when most of the squad joined already "Alright you lot. Don't try to call me by my in-game name, refer to me as Squad Leader. I'm going to set down some ground rules. No sniper kits, No marksman kits, No HAT kits. *player X* Takes the medic kit. None of you are to go further than 5 feet away from me unless directly ordered to by me, or you'll all be killed. I see anyone isolated from the squad, and i'm kicking. No chances, No exceptions. No, one grenade is not going to take us all out. I promise - and if it does, well life sucks. Do not fire unless fired upon, or receiving permission from me. I am not giving up our position because of your worthless no-life call of duty reflexes. Anybody shoots without letting me know, and I'm kicking. And last but not least, Do not talk unless you're calling out contacts, asking for clarification, or for permission to fire. I don't want to hear your suggestions for what we should do next, because i'm the leader here, not you. Lock 'n Load f*ggots." sounds harsh, I know - But it's the only way to set pubbies straight. kick em in the ass. I'm not particularily honest in what i say - I'll normally give 2 strikes before I kick for something like firing without permission. Trust me, guys. Ever since I started talking like this to my squad in the beginning of the round, It has gone beautifully, and the only times they fail is by my own mistakes. |

I agree to some point that you're right. You have to get some rules laid down however being the guy in most people's nightmares isn't the best way? I would say I agree with your rules 90%. I believe that a warning or two should be given before you kick them, but the overall no "BS" stuff is very good.
Personally, I'm a more relaxed player so I like to screw around in squads sometimes, and therefore I let people screw around in my squads a bit. You have to remember, this is a BF2 mod, so a lot of people are used to only screwing around :P If it's a new guy, I don't mind teaching him some tactics that you won't learn in training or the manual. |

If it works for you and the people in your squads, it's fine. Though personally, whenever someone is like that, I'm definitely leaving the squad. I'm there to have some fun, not to be ordered around

You can be a good SL (give orders, formations, assign kits even if a good SL has to ask which one in the squad is the best with a given kit, you won't give medic to an AR pro lol) and still be "gentle". You can have fun and still have a serious gameplay, but not too "metal-jacket-military" serious But, does the end justify the means?

The best victory is when the opponent surrenders of its own accord before there are any actual hostilities... It is best to win without fighting.

Whatever floats your boat, dude. But be aware that you'll only attract a certain type of players to your squads. There are positive as well as negative aspects with this kind of squad leading. A positive example would be that your sqd members are never too far from you. You'll always have medical attention and ammo at your disposal. The negative would be that, when you go down - you all go down. Basically no free thinking from your sqd members (as you put it worthless AI controlled characters) and all the weight is on your shoulders, which is great if you never make mistakes. You even write that yourself. "It has gone beautifully, and the only times they fail is by my own mistakes."
Personally I try to balance off a democratic and an authoritarian sqd leading style. But in my opinion it all depends on your sqd members expectation towards your style of leadership. |

I am a bit too old to be shouted at like that, I know how to play, so yes apply your personal ROE to the squad, but don't scare of the experienced guys.
If you want a squad full of 12 year old VBFers go ahead! |

Tried it myself and have been in more than one squad where the SL did run the squad the way you described it. And at least from my point of view it kills the Situational Awareness almost completely. The squaddies will just follow orders blindly and stop thinking themselves. But worst of it all they will no longer check the area and map and what is happening around them as whenever they walk to i.e. the next ridge to check something they will be ordered back. I prefer to give my squad the possibility to move free to a certain degree. Especially when there is no contact or when there is the possibility to quick flank targets. And to keep them tight and exactly on the location I point to them if it gives an advantage. A SL should be able to run both systems and it is his job to decide which behavior is best according to the situation...

Hate to say it but - if you stay bunched up then a Grenade/Grenadier/AT/LMG/HMG/Techie can so very easily wipe out your squad - and the dude who shoots you will laugh at you. You need to be spread out but not too far - it's just the truth.
