Default Chinook specific tips and tactics.

This is a thread to discuss the new Chinook and how to use it most effeciently.

At the moment the chinook packs a lot of weight in the rear, and the engine there doesn't seem to be compensating for it properly, so if you ever let go of your mouse/joystick, it's going to start tilting backwards FAST, even compared to all the other helicopters combined.

So my first tip is to get a co-pilot.
Unless you have TrackIR you can't use free camera in the chinook or it will tip over, and as it is your visibility is limited at best.
So get a co-pilot to be your eyes when you're landing, or you're going to have to wing it, and then it's only a matter of time before you mess up, hit a curb and everything goes to hell.

My second tip is to make sure you have a lot of room when you're landing.
The chinook has wheels instead of landing skids which will make landings smoother, no more tipping forward due to the inertia when you land.
But it will roll a bit on the wheels due to the decreased friction, which means you'll need a larger LZ to land in.

If the squad you're transporting wants crates in a specific place and it's too tight to land there, land outside and drop the crates from the air instead.

Discuss! ^^

Thanks for the advice!

As soon I started flying it I realized that it was unusually back heavy; kind of odd considering that there is a whole other rotor on the back. Hopefully that will be fixed (if it's a problem that is) soon.

The wheels have also been throwing me off because the helicopter loves to move on the ground and I just can't figure out how to stop it. Any specific advice for that?

I hope they'll put the chinooks on another map besides Operation Archer, like Kashan training/coop. There's a lot more space there and it would be much easier to practice like I did with the other aircraft.

Aero, what I usually do is hold down the S key for a bit until I start moving backward or stop moving forward. To go forward while on the ground I simply move the mouse down.

This is because the engine is offset (forwards I think) 0.5m therefor not centering the upward thrust (there is only one main engine, despite what it looks like visually), presumably to compensate for a tendency to pitch down while flying forward, though this is because the wings (help keep heli straight etc depending on rotation) are also offset for some reason.

Setting both of these to a centre position fixes both problems (and the persistant diving/pitching issues on all helicopters).

joystick!

With a joystick you can land it and with enough practice you can find the sweet spot for the throttle which will let you land and stop at the same time.
I personally felt that the chinook had a limited amount of visibility as well, however it just means you need to come in for the LZ at a low pitch with a good view of it early on. I wouldnt suggest landing in tight spots as the guy said before. Schit does happen.

When approaching the LZ, come in low (maybe 25m off the ground) with a good view of your LZ and approach it from a long viewable distance (maybe 75-100m away). This pretty much fixes the visibility issues associated with the chinook as it lets you get a good long eye on the spot youve designated for the landing.
You wills till have a bit of lack of visibility on the actual touchdown but it is not so bad that you will not see it.
If you try to come in from high, you will not see the LZ and you will probably slam and break the chinook on landing, cause you will have to force it down and land it on pure blind luck.

Good luck.

I was training with it today (on a local Operation Archer server since no training mode really exists anymore) and I found this out too. It actually controls quite a bit like a plane taxiing when it's on the ground; the up arrow making it go forward and the down arrow making it go backwards (or you can use the mouse too). It's a lot easier to land knowing that once you hit the ground you just hold onto S as if you were landing a plane and holding the up arrow.

In terms of landing visibility, it is poor, but by landing as iAstralPr0jekt said to, with a clear view of the LZ, it makes it a lot easier. The thing I'm getting used to know is knowing how to judge if an LZ is big enough for the large Chinook, that'll take some time.

Other than those 2 issues, there really isn't anything bad about the Chinook. I mean it flies very fast, has 60 flares (), moves around on the ground well, and even holds 2 supply crates. It really is a great helicopter, only a V22 could beat it imho (yes I know the whole discussion about why it's not in PR).

The only question I have is whether the Chinook was meant to be so horrible at compensating for its back end (in PR, not in real life). I have found that not letting the mouse go back even a little helps keep this in check (no flying backwards as a result). Also, has anyone notice how fast the Chinook can climb?

Anyway...

A good approach with the Chinook is the key to making a smooth landing. Also using your peripheral vision helps a lot too. Take in account the surroundings of your LZ. If there is an object in sight, use that as a visual reference to guide yourself down laterally and vertically. This way you don't have to rely on seeing the ground to make a landing. Also if you are picking up a squad, have them help find a good LZ. Squad leads have smoke for a reason (great visual reference for landing). Don't try to show off landing anywhere, as always make them go to a safe LZ.

S key will just make you go backwards and worse if you are on a hill tip the nose down and you'll put pressure on the wheels you'll need to be decelerating but holding the w or s keys are bad and you just need to pitch the nose down to stop it rolling backwards and vice versa.
Keys are easier since your mouse holds no change and can still check free came but TRACK IR is the best. and one thing all heli pilots should have is Widescreen fixer 1.60 its not a hack its how your FOV is meant to be no server bans for it and neither does PB so get it and you have better peripheral vision.

Tips:

1. Don't underestimate the speed of a Chinook; always fly within your skill limits (it is easy to get the Chinook up to +800mph, then nose-dive straight into the ground).
2. Remember that the Chinook has the least maneuverability of any chopper. Again, don't fly faster than a speed you can handle. Also, plan your landings ahead; don't try to turn/strafe into a landing.
3. PRACTICE! Do not fly it on a Public Server until you have spent time flying it by yourself. Most noobs underestimate the skill needed to fly a Chinook.

I hope this helps!
