Default Re: [HOW TO] Harrier Landing - Vertically

I really don't see the Harrier having issues that are unsolvable. However the problems are somewhat critical. The major issues are mostly this:
1. The Harrier needs to have the "simulated applied break" take off completely removed from this form of jet aircraft. This "simulated applied break" take off is associated with all Jet Aircraft currently. The engine is allowed a brief moment to increase in throttle percentage between 95% - 100% prior to take off. This momentary pause produces a terrible side effect that MUST be removed as the Harrier is unlike all other aircraft. This slight pause before the engine reaches full power and allows the Harrier to decend anywhere between 50-100 meters before it actually has powered thrust. This often results in the pilot crashing the Harrier while attempting to take off in a vertical state then transition into horizontal flight.

2. The Harrier needs an increased acceleration and deceleration rate higher than any other jet. As shocking as it sounds, it may need to have handling characteristics similar to standard BF2. These increased acceleration and deceleration rates are necessary to simulate the smooth transitional phase between vertical flight and horizontal flight provided by it's rotating thrust nozzles as in real life. This is to help prevent the jet from pitching down too far and stalling between these transitional phases.

3. The Harrier needs to have it's landing gear deploy into the down position sooner. It has a bad habit of deploying landing gear at the very limit of the stall speed. This is most notable while attempting to land and may result in the pilot belly-landing the aircraft before it has a chance to deploy it's gear. Most often resulting in severe damage or destruction of the aircraft.
These are basically the most notable problems the Harrier faces. The bombs and missiles work. However there is this... Odd... Occurrence with the main cannon that has a tendency to fire in one Harrier, and then if you get into another one (if you're lucky enough) that one might fire.

The only aircraft I look forward to is the F-15 and the Harrier. It feels like a tease having the Harrier this close but yet not close enough. As for v0.9, I'm curious to see if anythings been done to the Fighter-Bombers and other aircraft.

Take the Blue Pill or take the Red Pill?

M.Warren,
I completely agree with you on your suggestions for the Harrier, Although this is not the place to post them. Try the suggestion threads, and I will surely post some stuff with ya.

Also, I made a suggestion thread about adding a "landing gear indicator" to planes / jets but now I cannot find it. Might have been archived or deleted **EDIT: wasn't deleted... http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f18-...indicator.html** it was a usefull thread to, as the indicator light on all the planes brings some realism in and also helps noobs learn. It wouldn't even have to be added to all of the jets / planes. You would be the second person talking anout the landing gear deployment speed... I suggested an actual indicator in the form of a light on the HUD or a new weapon slot or just making the gear manually deploy'd. If they only do it to specific jets then that is cool too - harrier on the list ofcourse. For the harrier it would eliminate the external views and still allow you to land in the fashion I describe in the HOW TO. Instead of changing to see if the gear is out, it will show you on the HUD. Thus allowing you the start your climb. My "HOW TO" would certainly change if the gear deployment was altered to a higher speed. Even the increase/decrease throttle speed would also be a good fix as that would allow you to goto hover much fater and closer to the ground.

I couldn't agree more about the speed at which the gear comes out should be raised. The note on the mg working only sometimes, well- it works all the time, only it shoots from the top and to the side instead of directly infront. While in flight with the harrier, change to the right side view and right click to show the alt view... then fire the MG, you will see it. Also- when you goto that view to see, the controls of the aircraft become ...funky... Pitch up will become yaw right, etc. I have not reported this bug yet- will after I get a few more things to add on it. I don't want to just report the mg... would like to include details about the views and which ones work correctly, etc.

Wip or not it's on the training map and people do try it - your findings will help them out and who knows someone tries it,really likes it and decides to start making models for
PR (for example).
Thanks Socket!
I waste my time wisely to the benefit of others! I am gettting to the point where I might take a stab at modeling the harrier. I am familliar with how to make some types of models in MilkShape already (if that is what is used?). I don't think the rest would be hard to grasp. Is there any way I could find out who is or will be working on the harrier ATM? I would love to be of assistance. I have checked the Dev blogs but came up short.

No need to necro a 3 year old thread.

Search around the forums a little, you'll find your answer.
