missiles coming right in front of you are nearly impossible to dodge. i rarely use flares when its a SAM being fired at me as it just makes me a easier to spot target for all others. Against jets its a diffrent story and flares should be saved for this purpose. SAMs are very very easy to dodge whereas planes are probably gonna take you out.

For helos: get about 450-550 meters in the air. Get nice and comfortable, coordinate with your gunner so he can hit all the ground targets he wants. When you hear that lock, drop flares and (i can't remember correctly right now) do a back flip maneuver that gets you going down very fast, and hightail it out of there. works 2/3 of time for me and i usually stay up for a majority of the round. Flying low doesn't work cause you're perfect target for tanks.

For jets: drop flares every second or two while in hostile territory. You can do this for 30 seconds to a minute. Once you've run out of flares, move into friendly territory and hide. Rinse and repeat.

I remember reading in a Falcon 4.0 SAM evasion tutorial that one thing that works sometimes is you set a course down towards the earth so that the missile will lead your course with one that will have it crash into the earth before you do. Not sure if it works in BF2 but its something to consider.

remember to not get close to your own flares, since the missiles are proximity detonated now, they can still hurt you, even if they miss.

Re: Evasive Maneuvers in Jets
Dont just use one manuever, but always use a combination. A split S is easy to folow, but when you make a loop, then a split S, an upside down immhelman and a couple of more fancy manuevers, your very difficuilt to folow.
