Nibbster's Guide to Mining
Nibb$ters Guide to Mining
First of all: if it seems like any of the following text looks like another article or whatever from someone else, it is a pure coincidence! Now, onto the guide, Ill start off with the basics: 1 - Mining requires a lot of patience, if you dont have patience, you should skip this guide 2 - "Huh? I spawned as an engineer and only have 1 mine and 1 c4 pack??" Yes, thats right, when mining you will need some supplies, best would be to have your own supply box nearby (hidden ofc), a good alternative is a buddy with ammo, but you will only get a max of 3 to 4 mines and c4 of it. So resupply is REQUIRED to effectively mine an area, only 1 mine and 1 c4 will NOT be effective against the regular vehicle driver. 3 - Combine and improvise! Combine the elements of the area you are mining with you're improvasitation skills (I will return to this point later) 4 - When mining an area, always look for a nice hiding spot and an escape area. 5 - Know the map! Main roads, entrances to flags, sneak roads etc, this is very important since you want your mines to actually protect an area. 6 - Always keep on the look out for approaching vehicles/infantry, since your probably mining a supply/approach route for the enemy 7 - Check your terrain for hills etc, in the bf2-engine, mines can roll down a hill and not stay where you want them 8 - ALWAYS report enemy armor to your team/squad by using either VOIP or chat when you can. This will warn your team about possible threats etc. 9 - Remember the location of your mines, you dont want them to be used against yourself 10 - Again: PATIENCE; running from mines to resupply points and back takes a lot of time 11 - Dont mine routes that will be used by your team as well, teamkills made by mining is in 90% of the situations your own fault because of a wrong location. If an enemy route turns friendly because of capped flags or something, remove your mines immediately and keep an eye out for friendly vehicles so that you can warn them on time. ![]() Engineer Facts: * You can Place 8 mines before they start "disappearing" * You can place 2 C4 packs before they start "disappearing" Now lets go to the types of mining(names are made up by me): Protective Mining: This is purely to protect an strategic point (read: flags), this is meant to keep the enemy vehicles out of your capping area, enemies will obviously see the mines and thats what its meant to do: keep the enemy at distance, which will definately help your team out, if you're lucky tho, a brainless driver straight from NFS mite drive over your mines ![]() Hill Mining: This is meant to DESTROY enemy vehicles by placing mines after a bend or small hill so the incoming driver wont see whats around the corner, its a very dirty way to kill enemy vehicles but its very effective! FInd a nice bend or slope and place your mines behind it, the regular driver will go to fast to stop in time since he will notice the mines at the last moments, the best way to hill mine is to place them downhill around a corner in which the enemy will approach from the top of the hill, catching a lot of speed in the descend. Pictures explain more then a 1000 words: ![]() ![]() ![]() Concealed Mining: This will only work on roads covered in mud, grass, etc, maps like 7 Gates and Ghost Train are a nice example, the concept is simple: hide your mines in the grass etc on the muddy roads. ![]() Desert Mining: Its quite tricky to find nice locations in the desert for mines, because enemies will most likely drive around it since they can see them clearly and they have oceans of room to move around. But there are ways to conceal your mines, even though its not really effective, it might work with a bit of luck. Improvise on the area: find some dark spots on the road and place your mines on it, also in maps like Kashan, the mountain roads are nice mining locations since theyre dark and mines can be hidden in shadows, dark areas etc. ![]() Dirty Mining: This is one of the funniest ways to mine an area, place your mines on the main road you want to mine, in the regular drivers' sight, like a stupid noob from the Sims mined it, which make the enemy driver go offroad to move around them, then hide some other mines next to the main road on the route the enemy will probably take to move around them. Make sure you hide your mines very well in grass, just spotting one of these hidden mines will make the enemy driver go back and search for a better way around. ![]() Combined Mining: Applicable on all of the above mining types, use your C4 packs to put some extra backup to your mining against infantry trying to remove mines, or vehicles that suddenly stopped in front of your mines, keep in mind that you will need a nice spot to hide but still be able to watch your c4 packs, so look for that first, in this way you will also be able to keep on the lookout for approaching enemies and warn your team about them. Also remember that the c4 detonator has a 5 second startup, so put it in your hand as soon as you have visual contact with enemies. - The most effective type of mining is probably Comined Dirty Mining, my favourite as well. - "FLipped over" mines still detonate so dw - There is nothing more frustrating then a mine/supply crate rolling down a hill! Mining is one of the most effective ways to deal with enemy armor, but the mining itself is a bit tricky, keep practicing and try to know the maps in and out! Happy Mining, Greetzzz Nibbster |

Great guide nibbster, these are some pretty good strategies. A+ on the pics.
Most importantly, know your enemy. If you're playing against people you know will be watching for mines, concentrate mines in areas they are likely to rush into, or near their base where they don't expect them. If you aren't sure whether they will be watching for mines, assume they are! |

I don't think it was a mistake because at the top of the post he recommended patient, so that means waiting >5 seconds anyways.

Comprehensive and simple
I always find that placing a mine under a shadow works great. Assault on mestia has plenty of shadows on roads overcast by trees. Or trick vehicles into stopping into C4 range by placing an obvious Mine on the road. And a C4 further back into the incoming direction concealed ofcourse. When they stop to scope out the mine on the road they should be in C4 range. And the rest is history as they say. |

Another dirty tactic when you have 1 blowed up vehicle in a shadow: palace a mine next to it onto the sun like a noob, and another one under it. The incoming driver will notice the noobish one, and laught at the driver of the other wreck, then go through the wreck, because he thinks that mine have been cleared before. (Once a skilled driver of mine was fallen to this even while I was shouting to let me shot it apart from far to check.)
Another good thing when the enemy is used to your shadow mining to place another mine 20-30m after it onto the sun. It will distract the enemy searching for mines around it not noticing the closer one even if he is expecting it. This is not working reversed: A closer distract will alarm the enemy, and when he have left behind it, he will most likely notice the other one. And another: Enginiers will watch around for C4 near mines before they try to disarm them, but you can palace C4 just under mines where it can't bee seen. |

If you can get a buddy to join you then your ammo supply is unlimited.
Using ammo rifleman or automatic rifleman, just make sure he reloads his ammo bag before you reload your mines. Then he can keep dropping bags and reloading himself first. There may be a limit to how long you can do this but I have done it with smoke grenades for over ten minutes and never run out of ammo. Great guide BTW |

MoZo1 has some great tips. Basically anything to distract the enemy from noticing the real threat. For example sometimes in mestia I put a mine on the road, (left/right side of the road) and hide a c4 somewhere close to the other side of the road. Lots of trees etc where you can hide that c4 so that it's not visible.
The driver will notice the mine and 90% will drive around it. And when they do that it's party time since they are very close to your c4. |

Id like to elaborate more on the hill mining...
This is all I ever use if I can :P Expecially useful on 7gates in A8 (the lil village bit, bottom left hand corner) just stick a mine right behind the crest of the hill and watch as the apc launch over the top and lands right on top of the mine :P |

another desert trick
Desert Mining:
Its quite tricky to find nice locations in the desert for mines, because enemies will most likely drive around it since they can see them clearly and they have oceans of room to move around. But there are ways to conceal your mines, even though its not really effective, it might work with a bit of luck.
