Why? I asked people in who have direct access to people in the Russian Armed Forces, and they told me that the PKM was used much more often and got much more use then the RPK.

Well that goes against everything I've heard on the subject, from Russians who were conscripted in the '90s. The PKM is prefered especially since high-cap drums are non-existant for the RPK74, but it's not as widespread and certainly not regularly used at squad level like the RPK.


EDIT: A couple more points.

It's not really suprising, for 2 reasons -

1. The RPK uses the same ammo and shares most of it's parts with the AK.

2. the Russian military is really strapped for cash right now and the RPK is a lot cheaper to produce than the PKM.

I guess for the sake of gameplay 45-round magazines would be a PITA though.

But still, that means that the front-line troops (which we are all about) would try to get their hands on the PKM, and all the pics I've seen from Chechnya shows troops with PKMs and not RPKs.

Even that, I'd really like to see the RPK be used, i mean "realism that realism this" but this can differ this faction from others, and would be intresting in terms of gameplay.

Mother Russia can afford to buy as much combat approved machineguns as she needs. RPK & PKM usage on squad level is equal, special units prefer PKM because of it's overwhelming firepower.

Also in vanilla & mods devs missed one significant thing: only small series of RPK-74 macineguns equiped with drums, in most cases RPK-74 equiped with 45-round clips (and of course RPK-74 compatible with AK-74 30-round clips). Aged 7.62mm RPKMs used drums and those babies spread across the world - that is true, but since we talk about RPK-74, we mean 45-round version.

VSS vintorez would be very interesting in PR because of the bullet ballistics system, very slow round, with lots of drop. But pretty heavy stopping power.
