BBC presenter Richard Hammond injured whilst filming Top Gear

TV presenter suffers brain injury

Richard Hammond

Richard Hammond is seriously ill in a Leeds hospital

Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond has suffered a "significant brain injury" after crashing a jet-powered car at speeds of up to 300mph during filming.

Doctors at Leeds General Infirmary said they were "reasonably optimistic" the 36-year-old would make a good recovery.

************************************************** ************************************************** *

I have a mild traumatic brain injury which has been excascerbated by a previous medical history meaning that without the fractured skull or unconsciousness for long period of time I suffer from symptoms of a severe traumatic brain injury. You can google this stuff by sticking in "TBI" in google. first port of call would be the UK charity Headway.

He will suffer from reduced energy stores, lack of balance, lack of coordination, reduction of IQ till it's trained back up, loss of vocabulary (i'm back to approx 95% of vocab and 100% IQ) short term memory loss (go to sleep, forget most of the previous day) he'll lose his driving license until doctors will allow him to drive again, will most likely start to suffer fits and siezures in 9 months (no license back till 2-3 years after fits stop) when the brains microscopic lesions scar over. He'll experience severe emotional problems, with emotions out of control, up and down, psychotic feelings, depression, suicidal feelings. He'll be playing with drugs for years and years. In the US people who get brain injuries like this have a 1 in 10 chance of holding onto their marriages. I was split from my wife 6 months before i got my accident , but she still said she'd leave me as she didn't say "in sickness and health" in our marriage vows.

This sort of accident is extreme but will only go to educating many people about the effects of brain injuries from accidents in cars and extreme sports, war injuries of returning soldiers, people might spot the symptoms of a brain injury in people who they might have treated badly when they realise what has happened. Providing he goes public and moves into medical and science presenting (like Brainiac) his viewership will become eduated if he is brave enough upon recovery to talk about what happened to him and how it can happen to anyone and our present NHS is not geared up to readily diagnose and treat brain injury sufferers.

Shame. Some of my favourite Top Gear moments involved him. Steve Irwin and now this. Bad things only ever happen to good people.

America was a tad late into the First World War. They redeemed themself's and came in slightly sooner in the Second. Now they seem determined to start the Third.

Top Gear will never be same again.

A presenter is gone, that played a huge role AND Jeremy Clakson has been shown the dangers of playing aroudn with fast machines, some thing his general behaviour sometimes fails to reflect.

i'm sorry, but if you receive a brain injury, you are never returned to who you were before. I guess I ommitted to say that before, although assumed anyone reading what I'd posted about brain injuries would have assumed that.

I was really concerned watching Travis Pastrana flipping his moto-x bike and coming off on his head as the type of strike was so similar to mine. I haven't heard anything about possible brain injuries from him, but will check every so often

NOOOOO

I live in the US and I know Hammond is everywhere in Britain lol. Top Gear is THE best car show in the world. Dont tell me he's leaving.... or am I dumb to think he isn't?

Well whenever I see these shows on TV I always wonder what happens if the big risks people take on these shows actually go bad, sometimes I even wish it would happen (hasnt everyone?) Well, here we go. I was really looking forward to the next season, is that already filmed or what?
