PS3 Price

Hirai: The pricing that we announced for the PlayStation 3 is a price that ultimately offers fantastic value to the consumers. I think that we are offering a very good value for the consumers. We look at our products having a 10-year life cycle, which we've proven with the PlayStation. Therefore, the PlayStation 3 is going to be a console that's going to be with you again for 10 years. We're not going to ask the consumers to suddenly buy another PlayStation console in five years' time and basically have their investment go by the wayside. So for all those reasons, I think at $599 we're offering a very good value to the consumers.

I think they are going a little overboard with the price this time. $400 was expensive for the Xbox 360 alone which didn't have any decent games during the launch or come with any free ones, and then I had to buy a 60 game which I haven't played in months now. I can't imagine the price of the PS3's games though. I am thinking a minimum or 60-70 and then with tax, possibly 80.

IMO, these consoles are just a rip off now because all these fanboys are buying them and thinking they are the greatest thing ever, but for that price along with the cost of games, extra controllers, etc. I could buy a mid range pc. Add just another 400-600 dollars and you will have something that will last for a lot longer then that and play a lot more games.

Yeah, not really wanting to throw down $600 just to be able to play Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII. Everything else looks like ass, so far

Will Mercenaries : WIF be only on the PS3, or will it come to the PC? If so, I see no reason at all to get a PS3.

I can't see spending $400 on a PS3 plus $60 when for that price you can get a decent video card and for the price of two games a gig of memory that will last you a couple of years plus give you acesess to mods, internet ectr ectr. The problem I see is game manufactors will increasingly go to the consoles because they can charge whatever they want (ripoff in other words) by making their games one console only, they aren't as afraid of piracy issues and they can get benifits from the console company.

Yeah, if you guys don't want one, don't, stop crying about the price. Yeah, for that price you could buy a decent graphics card, but what the hell do you think is in the PC? The PS3 IS a high-end PC, and game manufacterers always put the best games on consoles first. The only PC I've seen with better specs than the PS3 costed about £5000, nearly ten thousand dollars. I'm pretty sure that's cheaper than any PS3. They're not going to drop the price at launch just because the games aren't ready yet. You don't have to buy it if you don't want to. I want to, because there are some cracking games coming out on it and I love the experience with console gaming. It feels more like you're on a level playing field, there are no bonus points for having more expensive computers and hotter graphics cards.

And anyway, how come everyone's like "OMG I NEED TO GET A NEW GRAPHICS CARD TO PLAY CRYSIS, IT'S SO LEET!!111", yet when it comes to buying a PS3 nobody wants to pay. Right.

Malik has a point.

Find a PC with 9 processing cores (hell, I'll settle for octo-core), and Ram that runs at the CPU clock speed (3.2GHz). I guarantee it won't be anywhere near as cheap as the PS3. (Not to mention it has a GeForce 7 series card, specially designed for the PS3).

Well-- actually you can access the internet from the PS3. It runs a Linux operating system (such as one I use on my Laptop), which can run apps like Mozilla Firefox, even Internet Explorer if you're prepared to go through Microsoft's library dependency hell to get it to run.

Considering the open source architecture, it's highly likely mods will be easier, not harder, to create and run on the PS3 than on PC Windows.

it will plummit in price after a while, once it drops to a price worth getting ill buy one.
PS tend to have a far wider seletion of games, where as almost all of the xbox games tend to be crossconsole games.

Yes, it'll go down in price after the 'next generation' components (such as Bluray laser technology, which is really what keeps it up) drop down in price and become more widely available. That said, the prices given PS3 at the moment is cheaper than most (if not all, I haven't checked) Bluray players... even though it can play Bluray disks.
