Default Where does the British Royal Family get their money?

Was listening about some of the developments in that upcoming wedding, and I heard the dress was going to cost a boat load. Then I got wondering: Where do these guys get the money? I'm guessing they're deeply invested in various major businesses, and probably directly own a few. Is this the case?

Nicked from another webpage which is near as damit, saved me typing it:

Quote:
Monies to support the Queen in the exercise of her duties as head of state of the United Kingdom (the Head of State Expenditure) come from the Civil List. This is a return of a small portion of the revenue from the Crown Lands that are surrendered by the monarch to parliament at the beginning of each reign; all Crown Land being administered by The Crown Estates, an institution that is answerable to parliament. In the 2003-04 fiscal year, the amount surrendered was ?176.9 million, where the Head of State Expenditure was ?36 million. The Head of State Expenditure does not include the cost of security.

Only the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh receive funding from the Civil List. The Duke receives ?359,000 per year.

So when the next guy steps in, he inherits that land, surrenders a one-time lump sum to the Parliament and receives a stipend from it over time?

As i read it they own 'x' area of land and 'have' to lease 'y' of it to the government and in return the government pay up however many million per year in civil list costs but i could be wrong...

We spend less than ?1 a year on The Royals, & they account for most of our tourism.

They have lots of money because they rarely spend any money. Does the Queen have a flash car? No.

What does the Queen actually have to spend money on except her Family? Not much!

Having done a lot of work at events which members of the Royal family attend - I think that maybe you're a little bit off about how much they cost us (alhtough it's not much per person).

The day of a royal visit at 6am 2/3 dog teams turn up to search within about a 100m of the site to be visited. Followed by several security teams which break up and do their own thing.

Then when the royal party turns up, it's either in an armed escort or by helicopter. Occasionally they will travel by rail - if they do then of course - the track which they will travel on will be seached along it's length

Now although the Royals don't own this stuff, they still have to get the money to pay for it from somewhere and it quickly adds up to a tidy sum.

Of course, I've not mentioned any of the other many costs the Royals have, such as upkeep of their palaces, estates, homes, etc.

With the exception of a few grants (which probably also come from government funded charities etc - i.e. taxes). Yes, we pay for them to not do a lot
