Fighter Jet Escort??

This is a question i would love to pose to the defense secetary or someone concerning the bomb threat stuff.

Q. Why is a Fighter Jet used to escort a plane when a bomb alert arises...How is a fighter jet going to help? Its not like it can shoot the bombers or anything and if the plane does blow up the fighter jets are also in danger?

Whats ur views on this any one whos knows more about why they are used i would like to know.

I think they're used as a deterrent.

If the plane starts flying towards a crowded place, they will shoot down the plane. It may look bad but if you think about it it saves hundreds of lives.

They send up the jets to make visual contact with the plane and cockpit crew. Its there to provide eyes on, and in case it becomes a threat to ground targets the jet WILL shoot it down. The fighter isnt that close to the aircraft where it would get blown up and they usually send them up in pairs.

So it does serve a usefull purpose.

I imagine the jets reassure the pilots and calm them down a bit. As calm as all pilots (civil, mil or private) if I was told there was a dangerous passenger onboard I'd feel much better with escorts.

Yep as others have said it is a worst case thing. if the plane goes in a dive ectr or starts heading for a croweded area the jets will down it.
