I found this sentence quite funny and since this is a war game forum I will put it here. No offense to the french just a good laugh.

I agree on:

Fring - Awesome multi platform chat client.
Abduction - Better than Papi jump
CoPilot Live - Will probably need to buy this as i don't have a data plan for the google maps navigation.

Some more useful stuff:
ApkInstaller - Good for installing apk's from sources other than android market.
Google Earth - Only available for nexus one at the moment.
Google Skymap (dunno if this was preinstalled) - good to impress wife/gf
Jewels - classic timewaster..
Layar - EPIC Augmented Reality App
Radiant Lite - Sidescroll shooter with style
Task Manager by Futon Redemption - Great to kill tasks and generall see what your phone is up to.

one thing i realized was that the scrolling in the app menu on the Nexus One got smoother the more apps were in it
I really hope that they'll be adding Google Earth for the Desire soon...it's pretty much a carbon copy anyway. I'm using Advanced Task Killer instead of Task Manager, works great too.

I'm not sure what phones this works on, but I'm gonna assume that as long as you have 2.0.1 or 2.1 it'll work:
google earth for 2.0.1 and non-rooted users | Droid Life: A Motorola Droid Blog

I have it on my Droid and it worked great on 2.0.1 and still works on 2.1

-----------------------------------------------

Some other apps I've found:

Tube Downloader -- Downloads videos from Youtube as either video or audio only

HandyCalc -- Probably the best scientific calculator, can solve for variables, graph functions, and even works as a unit converter.

Formulas Lite -- A database of math/physics/chemistry formulas and a range of math/geek tools. Not the most useful app but I like having it

Skype -- Useful if you have an account... can also use to call if you have minutes with them (No video streaming or receiving, though)

ColorNote -- A simple note writer, and lets you paste them on your desktop as widgets

GPS Status -- Compass/GPS receiver, tells compass heading, magnetic declination, pitch/tilt, vertical and lateral velocity, and an array of grid formats (I have mine set to MGRS)

I have an iPhone 3G at the moment. 4 months left on the contract but I'm pissed off with Apple for being so bloody dismissive of the rest of the industry. Also not happy with O2.

I don't wish to hijack CRF's thread, but if anyone knows of an Android app for server RDP access (i.e. remote deskop, not VNC), and also something for SSH, then please post details.

Looking at ditching the iPhone asap and maybe getting the HTC Desire so nice to see there's a good selection of apps.

Yup, got "Remote RDP Enterprise" installed on my Desire, epoch. It costs about two pounds IIRC, and it connects on the RDP port of your choice with login credentials as you specify, obviously. The Enterprise version supports TLS/SSL encryption.

There are also several SSH/Telnet clients available, although I've not tried any. I'm certain there's a couple of decent ones available - I'll do some digging and have a look at a few if you remind me at the weekend mate.

I've picked up a Desire for £35 a month on Vodafone; 600 minutes and unlimited texts, with unlimited (500MB 'fair use', really) data via 3G/GPRS. 2 year contract is the only downside, but with no purchase cost of the handset. Buying one outright and shopping for a good sim-only contract will probably save you fifty to hundred quid, if you can afford the handset cost up front. Cheaper than an iPhone, none of Apple's ridiculous lawsuits or app-approval process to deal with, and an open-source platform. Nicer than dealing with the daft situation over at MacWorld, IMO.

In the spirit of the rest of the thread, other, more general apps I've rapidly become fond of:

3G Watchdog (for keeping an eye on that 500MB "unlimited" limit.
3Banana - note-taking and tagging.
ASTRO - file manager (don't bother using it as an AppKiller, I really don't get why people want a task manager when the OS manages it so well)
BatteryTimePro - estimates useage time left based on current battery charge, also puts a more accurate reading into the status bar.

And although it's not from the app store - Google Calender is great to use. I put my shifts at work onto the mobile, it syncs to my Google account, the g/f can view when I'm on nights or working weekends when booking her weekends off or whatever. Didn't even realise it was happening initially. Google Calender then syncs with Outlook on my PC, so I can quickly link tasks to emails or generally try and organise myself a bit better... works very well indeed.

CRF is right - barcode scanner is great. I want QR codes putting into PR as easter eggs, so very badly lol.

Hmmm - Vodafone you say? I wanted Orange, but there's no mention of it on their website.

Might buy the phone upfront (Expansys have them) .... will see how frivolous I'm feeling by the end of the day.

Comes highly recommended from me too. I've used iPhones before, though not extensively, but this thing is really impressing me. Everything works incredibly smooth too, thanks to the pretty powerful cpu.

For 30 quid a month orange were offering 500 minutes, unlimited texts and a lower capped data rate, at least they were a week ago. I've not seen it on their site either, but they're certainly selling contracts for them via Carphone Warhouse and Phones4U - the latter were under the impression that it was an Orange-exclusive handset, and were quite surprised when I informed them otherwise lol.

Vodafone have been pretty good to me via the move - I've heard some awful things about their customer service from my dad, but I had a call a few hours after my port from O2 to ask if everything had carried across okay, and some of my loyalty bonus from O2 had been transferred over as well; they're offering a sim-only contract to a friend or family member; 600 minutes, unlimited texts and data for £10 per month, 12 month contract. I've offered it to the g/f, she's going to consider - are you interested if she doesn't want it?

Decided to be sensible, so I've ordered a Desire from Carphone Whorehouse, collecting tomorrow. Orange, unlimited data (500MB reasonable use). I rarely make calls or texts, so it's fine for me.

Looking forward to trying some of the apps that have recommended.
