The Battle of the Somme

90 years ago, the Battle of the Somme started. The worst day in British Military History. I would just like to pay tribute to those who gave their lives in the defence of this country and those are still defending our lands.

Did you know that unexploded shells, bodies of humans and horses, tanks, planes are still being found today from that bloody battle.

Lest we forget

It was on the History channel. Something like 52,000 British troops were killed in a single battle.

On the first day of the battle, July 1st 1916, there were 57,470 British casualties of which 19,240 died. The bloodiest day in our army's history, a day that should never be forgotten.

Lest we forget.

theres a battleground in france where they have actually found a line of troops with bayonets fitted that were travelling down a trench and it collapsed on them under artillery. They were found upright!

trench warfare utterly destroyed the ideas in young mens heads of the chivalrous/righteous knight in shing army riding into battle on a steed. The senseless slaughter of troops to move back and forth taking mere feet at a time is a disgusting waste of life and a real horror to any of us who researches the change in combat to trench warfare

Somber lesson of the Somme: Don't charge a maxim gun.

A horrible battle indeed. 57,000 wounded, thats almost the amount of americans that died in the entire 10 year long Vietnam conflict.

I studied the battle of the Somme in History at college last semester. nasty stuff.

BTW, a new series of Blackadder is being considered in the time of the Russian Revolution. Atkinson and Fry and up for it apparently.

I've always found the first world war the most fascinating war in history. Very good article!

I also think WWI is very fascinating, but the most ridicilous thing is, on school I never learned something about this war. All the attention went to WWII (and we where teached very one-sided, simplistic views of this war). Also unbelievable to see how more than a million people died just to move the frontline 8 kilometers at the deepest point. Sometimes I wonder how the world have looked like today if this war never started, because with 'Verdrag van Versailles' which said Germany was to blame for this whole war, the ingredients for WWII where there already.
