It's a 'light rail' train -- it could have easily killed our hero but is unlikely to caused a whole lot of damage to the automobile passengers. Light rail trains are generally driven by electric motors, not diesel-electric hybrids used by heavy rail.
Our local light rail, called 'MAX' only has achieved such a high KDR due to people choosing to cross in areas clearly marked to the contrary. -REad |

Potential Energy = (1/2) * Mass * (Velocity^2)
So velocity IS more important than mass in any collision. That being said, if the mass of the train was enough it might not have been a good outcome (although I doubt the mass was that high as it was able to stop REALLY quickly. |
