Train + Speed + Vehicle does not end well. I know of people in Boston who've been hit by the T going much slower than that and been seriously injured or killed. The guy in the van would have just a door between him and a 25+ ton train. Doesn't matter how fast it's going, that would have left more than a dent.

Good for the hero, bad choice of directions though. Thankfully all is well, hopefully stupid van man doesn't do it again. Either that, or he pays the motorcycle passenger to follow him at all grade level crossings from now on.

WOW..awesome job

Even at low speed the damage would have been far more then a dent..heavy vehicles pack allot of force even at low speed - a truck hitting your car at 10-20kph is enough to total it.

Well, this is where the Mythbusters steps in. Or should have anyway.

I think that in the same way a car wont go to a instantaneous standstill in speed when you hit the brakes(because the tires would loose traction), the car would have been pushed away with squealing tires and had force impacting on the entire side which the train struck, not only the drivers door. So unless the entire chassis collapses like a card house, the driver should be fine.

But some officials should probably have a look at that crossing, track holes so large and deep that cars get stuck in them seems like a slight safety risk

I bet there was a time where news channels listed news importance by its value of change either of global or local scale, and not just "whatever it takes to keep you watching".

Force = mass x acceleration. Even if it's moving at less than 20 mph, it's still a train, and that van was directly in its path; it wasn't going to just clip the end and spin it. The age and construction quality of that van, tire condition and pressure and basically chance / luck would have been the only things determining how much damage was done and if that guy survived.

This video shows a faster moving train, but it still shows what a big heavy train can do to a van.

How informative, I love Top gear

Anyway, I would imagine it too look a bit more like the 1:17 crash, except the train seemed to be moving a bit faster.
