I like the Finnish war movies I've seen (Talvisota and Tali-Ihantala 1944). I wouldn't say that anyone of them really take a stadn - they just tell about things as they really were. That is something I really appreciate.

Apocalypse Now, I used to hate. I used to look at it as a typical "anti-war" movie about how wrong the war in Vietnam was. But then I realized that the film doesn't really take a stand. It never really says that the motives behind the American presence in Vietnam were wrong, just that they handled the situation in the wrong way! This I can agree with, and Kurtz have some great lines about the brutal reality of CI-warfare (that he needs cold-blooded men that can kill without passion and judgement to get the job done) that make alot of sense.

All the SPR-crap I hate. Most WW2-movies feature to much waving flags, tears, etc... So emotional, so pathetic! I just... God, I can't stand that kind of crap! Makes me wanna puke
The Finnish WW2-films are exceptions... So are some of the stuff the Japanese (Nobi, or whatever it was called), Soviets (Idi i Smotri, in particular) and Germans (Stalingrad and Der Untergang!) did. Sadly enough, I can't remember any American WW2-movie that really got me hooked. Guess you make more interesting movies when you lose the war than if you win it.

that's a major reason why war movies never quite became all the rage... either they're just patriotic flag-waving pieces, gore-exploitation flicks, anti-war films, or the occasional "big battle where everything is so historically accurate that it gets boring" kinda film like a bridge too far, etc...

war is a great dramatic background, but should not become an issue of politics

Not that simple. War has always something to do with politics, in a way or another. But it seems, that politics is never solely to blame.

About movies:
It is hard to make a movie about war without taking a stand of some kind, since as we all know, war evokes a lot of feelings. In my opinion Talvisota is more that a statement: "it went like this, end of story." But it isn't a flag waiving sentimental piece of shit either

Anyone else who is gonna watch The Pacific when it comes out on TV roughly in a month?

I am pumped tbh.

I found this sentence quite funny and since this is a war game forum I will put it here. No offense to the french just a good laugh.
"Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion. All you do is leave behind a lot of noisy baggage."

Yeah, that's gonna be awesome.
HBO has tons of $$$ , so they always have great actors, special effects, and they often shoot on location.

The Pacific is made by a lot of the same people who did Band of Brothers (another very popular HBO WWII series about the 101st Airborne) and apparently there are some of the same actors too.
And since it's on HBO, they have a fair amount of violence and language, but that's part of what makes it realistic, and therefore, good.

In one of the trailers, I saw a Japanese officer having a melee duel with his Katana against a Marine with a bayonet. Win.

Guys, when a new player comes, just answer his question and go on your merry way, instead of going berserk! It's THAT simple!

If it's as good as BoB, I will make sweet man love to HBO.

Elite Squad is in Portugese, it is about the BOPE. Ddefinitely worth watching.

I support the recommendation of Beaufort, it is excellent. Aside from being very deep, it made me want to try to make a map for PR based on it but I haven't really got the time to get properly into the BF2 editor, perhaps one day.

Waltz with Bashir is an aminated film looking at Israeli intervention in the Lebanese Civil War.

Shake Hands With the Devil is a much better film about the Rwandan Genocide than Hotel Rwanda, it is based on the autobiography of Lt-Gen Roméo Dallaire commander of UNAMIR.

Warriors is a two part TV show about British soldiers during the Bosnian Civil War.

I am surprised that no one has suggested the Battle of Algiers (if someone has I apologies, I have read the thread it its entirety but I may have missed this). It is a film about the Algerian War focusing on the actions of the FLN in Algiers.

That will do nicely for now.

Enjoy!

EDIT: What is The Pacific? I have heard nothing about it.
