Thumbs up The Bear Went Over the Mountain: Soviet Combat Tactics in Afghanistan

something you folks may be interested in....

it's an english translation of soviet after-action reports during the afghan insurgency. Would have served as a millitary school officer training aid, or something.

The Soviets would have won without our intevention.

Their Mi-24 helicopters killed anything and everything. Our supplying them with Anti Aircraft stopped their complete annhiliation. The Russians were merciless.

you don't waste any time getting into the flamewars, do you

saudi arabia was the primary financer of afghan insurgency, US sent money via proxy but was still a secondary backer.

Russia probably benefitted from lack of western-style media for their COIN operations, but consider that tito's yugolsavian partisans during ww2 faced far more brutal odds and were still ultimately successfull.

I've gotten about 1/4 of the way through, it's very different from what you might see in an analogous western text. It's more a collection of short combat stories than an official manual of lessons learned. Very easy reading.

Interesting read. One of the tactics used seems to be shelling villages so that the surviving civilians will migrate to other areas and leave only mujahideen in the area. Another one is to use local afhans as cannon fodder. No wonder the russians never gained any local support for their war, the afghans must have hated their guts out.

here's another one:

http://www.au.af.mil/au/awc/awcgate/...st/vietnam.txt

It's a somewhat analogous western text of combat vingettes in vietnam. For issue to officers originally
