Lightbulb Suggestions for recording/editing software

Hi guys could you give me some good ideas for recording programs I could buy? I was thinking of putting together some videos. I was thinking of buying fraps and maybe you guys could give out some ideas for editing programs. For the cost, just keep it under $100

Fraps + Sony Vegas = good as it gets. Get the newest version Vegas and make sure it's the medium priced one. There's a cheap version, good version, and wtfbbq version. the medium one has alot of stuf for the price. Can't go wrong.

I tried Sony Vegas once but I just couldn't work the damn thing, my first problem was trying to find the actual preview window!

I'm well aware I could just google this but if anyone's got it bookmarked etc, does anyone have any handy 'guides for beginners' for Vegas? I was semi-proficient with Windows Movie Maker and managed to make this as my 2nd ever video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OIjCv7ZFMAM (At work atm with no speakers, not sure if they've ripped off the music?)

But I gave up using it and thus stopped making videos last year because I was sick of it crashing after hours of work... Or saving it periodically only to be told at the end that it was unable to convert it out of a .wmm file!!
