Default Scots at War

I just seen this advertised on TV tonight, thought it looked like a quite good mix of Ross Kemp: Afghanistan and the history of the Scottish soldier.

Scots at War

Quote:
In the fascinating 3-part documentary series Scots at War, presenter and former SAS Major Ken Hames travels to war-torn Afghanistan with the Royal Regiment of Scotland as they take their place on the front line in the fight against the Taliban.

The programme follows the day-to-day life of today’s modern troops in Afghanistan, looking back on the proud history of those men who fought in the Scottish Regiments before them.

Over three hour-long episodes, Ken Hames spends time with the troops on the front line, as well as travelling through Scotland to discover the background to this extraordinary fighting spirit.

Ken, who comes from five generations of British soldiers, some of whom served in Scottish regiments, also visits some of the great battlefields where Scottish soldiers fought and died.

With unique access to archive footage, paintings, heraldry and military artefacts, mixed with eyewitness testimonies from soldiers and commanders, Scots at War reveals the extraordinary stories of past regiments.

The programme discovers how Scots forces played a huge part in the building of an empire on which the sun never set, and helped defend Britain in two world wars.

Closely following the extraordinary lives of today’s Scottish soldiers in Afghanistan, and looking back at nearly 400 years of battle, Scots at War brings to life the experience of the brave Scots who has fought for Britain throughout history, drawing parallels between historic battles and today’s current operations.
It begins Tuesday, January 26th at 9pm but only on STV (Scottish ITV).

For those that are interested in watching this but you don't live in Scotland, and if your lucky enough to have a SKY box, follow this handy guide to add whatever regional ITV channel you want.

Isn't all regional ITV channels and stuff on Sky, but just on the obscure channels like between the porn and before the Sky help stuff?

Looks good though, will watch.

I know I had to manually input the regional ITV channels myself and that is were they do end up, to be fair that was a long time ago so Im not sure with the newer sets, but I do know all the regional BBC channels were already wedged in between the help and porn

The presenter is Ken Hames a former Major in the British Army, here is his Personal Website. According to wiki he started his career as a junior soldier and tank driver, but his own bio doesn't mention his early career so not sure about that. He is one of the few men to have served in the Para's, Marines and the SAS.

He seems a pretty decent guy, perhaps no Ross Kemp but who can compete with the legend that is Kemp

Ken Hames also got interviewed about Scots at War on the cringe worthy local talk show The Hour today

Linky

The start of the interview also shows a little clip of the documentary itself, you may recognise a certain PR loading tune playing in the background

EDIT: Ah slighty ninja'd curse my slow ass typin skills :P

Looks good, the Scots have a very distinguished history serving in the armed forces, in many forms that took through history.

This is the 2nd episode of the show, for some reason I don't think they have put up the first or third episode, but I shall post them up when they appear.

I've really enjoyed all 3 episodes, my only criticism would be that it is made for a broader audience and doesn't go too deep into the what it covers, but over those 3 parts it has highlighted many things that I would like to know more about in my own time. Also it certainly leans more toward the history element of the show and uses the modern footage and interviews as a counter.

So don't expect up close and personal action like that of the Ross Kemp series, but more a History Channel type show with it highlighting key moments in military history that Scots soldiers have been involved in around the world, and also going into the personal histories of famous regiments and individual soldiers, with my favourite being the story of Robert Kirkwood and his capture by the Shawnee Indians that was shown in episode one.

EDIT: Also cheers to Froztbyte who posted up pt4 of this episode in the GD, I didn't realise they had uploaded anything until I seen his post today, hence the update.... cheers m8
