*Spoilers (again)*

1. Mordin is a biologist. His specialty is working with genetics, microbes, and tissue samples. He is a scientist so I understand why people are choosing him, he is probably pretty handy with computers, but it's not his specialty. I'm not sure if you can get away with choosing Mordin in that situation, but a lot of people have enough problems keeping him alive period that I wouldn't put him in an extra hazardous position.

2. Who did you choose as your Fire Team Leader? If you choose someone who isn't really a qualified leader it can lead to bad things for the specialist.

When choosing the character the in game levels and skills acquired via leveling up are irrelevant. However their skills as a character (ex. Legion being an AI himself lends himself well to tech specialties. Garrus having lead a small strike force before lends himself to being a leader.) seem to matter a great deal in the outcome. Your team mates are not all just interchangeable, they are specialists in different fields, with some having overlap. It's up to you to choose who is most fitted to each position. Some of these character's specialties don't really come up in the final mission (ex. Grunt being an 8 foot walking tank, or Thane being a superbly trained assassin didn't really come into play) which is kind of disappointing.

Yeah, some cutscenes are a bit dodgy (I can't use a shotgun normally, I don't carry one, but I'll just magic one from behind my back to scare you).

Spoiler
Just got to the end with my Renegade char. All characters had loyalty missions done. Like I said id try Mordin as the tech specialist too and he got popped in the head. So yeah I guess certain crew members for certain jobs get killed.

Used Miranda as the biotic sheild, ended up losing a teamate because she was too weak.

cant help it but love these lines

Gunnery Chief: This, recruits, is a 20-kilo ferrous slug. Feel the weight.
Every five seconds, the main gun of an Everest-class dreadnaught accelerates one to 1.3 percent of light speed.
It impacts with the force of a 38 kiloton bomb. That is three times the yeild of the city buster dropped on Hiroshima back on Earth.
That means Sir Isaac Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-bitch in space. Now! Serviceman Burnside! What is newton's First Law?
Recruit: Sir! An object in motion stays in motion, sir!
Gunnery Chief: No credit for partial answers, maggot!
Recruit: Sir! Unless acted on by an outside force, sir!
Gunnery Chief: Damn straight! I dare to assume you ignorant jackasses know that space is empty. Once you fire this hunk of metal, it keeps going till it hits something.
That can be a ship, or the planet behind that ship. It might go off into deep space and hit somebody else in ten thousand years.
If you pull the trigger on this, you are ruining someone's day, somewhere and sometime.
That is why you check your damn targets! That is why you wait for the computer to give you a damn firing solution!
That is why, Serviceman Chung, we do not 'eyeball it!' This is a weapon of mass destruction. You are not a cowboy shooting from the hip!

If for no other reason then to understand what the hell is going on. It felt extremely familiar to me as a person who played the first game. I have no idea what that would have been like if I hadn't gone through the first game, but I bet I would have been very lost and confused.
