I had those and they were top quality. Lasted me 3+ years with no issues at all (except for the time I accidently tore the wires in half).

I've been using their gaming headsets since the late 80's, and their latest model that I recommend is the GameCom 367 closed-ear. MSRP is about $45, so you can probably find them in stores or online for around $35-40. These use standard audio jack, so no worries if you dislike USB.
I have these now, and I'm just as satisfied with them as any headset I've owned.

I feel so much cooler playing Shattered Horizon now.

I will agree that the Fatal1ty head is good.. It worked great up until the point that a dog destroyed it. I loved how the mic could twist and such... But anyways, I just ordered this (its usb, but meh): Buy CAD U2 USB Headset with Microphone | USB Microphones | Musician's Friend

Hopefully it turns out good - I'll reply here once I test it out if you're still interested.

platronics all the way, I cant count the number of headsets i went through before i found platronics. They are seriously the best brand out there and they are all I buy now.

Have bought 3 so far and not a single technological fault with any of them, they can withstand so much punishment too, I have dropped mine of the floor, slung them across the room by accident when tripping on the wire, yanked out the headset from the jacks again by accident and they still work. The toyota land cruiser of headsets lol.

Also they are the only one with good sound levels and clarity imo.

Exactly what I have I think, years and working as good as ever, only 2 problems I see are material is cracked a bit on the earpiece and the volumne contol on the cable seems to have a loose conection or something (sometimes leaves you with listening to one channel etc, but can just readjust it).

I have to say that I love my "fatality" headset. Very good sound quality, and if you can get it working with the software properly it's got 'surround sound'. Haven't broken it at all yet, but I have been looking after it. The only thing that's happened is the signature and L have rubbed off almost completely.

Ahh, I would try that, but I don“t use the usb adapter, though I think its in the actual volumn contol for me, cos fiddling with that fixes it
