Default File conversion question

So a mate of mine uploaded a vid and then accidentally destroyed the original. He managed to download it, but it's a VP6 file now, not the WMV he originally uploaded. Does anyone know a reliable and not-spyware-packed converter so we can get the WMV extention back for editing?

M.

try DVD Videosoft, it's free software, just type it in in google or any search engine and see what you can find, there's some conversion programs, dunno if it will help you though...

I think I used to have a converter that would transfer On2's VP6 format to AVI, will see if I can find it and post download links after confirming it works.

EDIT: Ok, I did find how to convert a VP6 to WMV or AVI. It's a multi-program process though. You'll need a few programs, all free of spyware.

As for the conversion itself, I tested it on a VP6 with a duration of 0:01:17, at a resolution of 1280x720 and a file size of about 11MB. The conversion to WMV took almost 10 minutes, but the end file size was reduced to about 7MB while still retaining full resolution and quality.

First off, do you have FFDShow on your pc? It's a free and popular codec program that allows viewing of most video formats.

Next, you'll need On2's VP7 PE codec to properly view the original file. Again, free program.

And last, you'll need the Digibyte Open Video Converter, which is the actual conversion program. This is a pay-to-use program, PM me for info.

Once those programs are installed and configured properly, you just need to run the OVC software, select the conversion format and new file save name/location, and start the conversion process. Total time of conversion will depend on the original file size, resolution, duration and the same stats of the outcome file. Don't expect an instant conversion though.

Search O&O Unerase and you might be able to get the original file back, that is, providing he didn't shred the files using something like East-Tec.
