British people on here, I have a question:
Why don't your police carry guns?  I mean, I'm sure there's a logical reason, but can someone enlighten me? I've always theought it somewhat strange, because what if a cop witnesses a guy sticking up a store or something, what's he gonna do? Threaten a guy with a gun with his club? Then again, England has much more serious gun control laws than here in the States, so I guess it kinda balances out...

It's meant to be safer for everyone - including the policemen - if they don't.
Here's an example. If you're in the middle of a burglary and an armed policeman turns up, most people would take a shot at him. It's him or you, right? Now consider you know policemen aren't armed - there's no gunfight and everyone gets away unharmed. Sure, the criminal might get away with some money, goods, whatever - but surely that's better than a loss of life? In any case, modern methods are sufficiently good that a large proportion of offenders are caught, even if not on the scene. And of course, for major incidents there are firearms squads ready to be called out. Things are different in the US, however, due to more lenient firearms laws. |

I love the way you are thinking. That's why Britain was safer than our countries. But today you are using weapons in some areas? Things change not for the best...
Look at our awesome French Gendarmerie armoured vehicles:  Kids are dangerous in France...  But you guys are funny too. Only the English can do that (it's sadly a fake):  And what about the modern US equipment: a new portable phone...  May the force be with you...  Greenpeace not welcome in the mother land  Italian Carabinieri patrol car... No comments  Fear the Chinese (I guess?) patrols
