I don't know much about classical music either, but I guess that Mozart, Bach and Beethoven are the three big names (but that depends on who you ask of course). Stravinsky is one of the big players of the modern age.

The language and concepts contained in this post are guaranteed not to cause eternal torment in the place where the guy with the horns and pointed stick conducts his business.

i'm a bit of a fan. I'll give you some basics to start off.

these are more mainstream:
Vivaldi the four seasons are good (winter being the best).
Grieg, in the hall of the mountain king
Wagner, Ride of the valkyries is great.
Beethoven's Moonlight sonata

But the true gems are less known:
Barber, Adagio for Strings.
Debussy, Clair de Lune
Berlioz, Symponie Fantastique (very epic and meaningful, look up the story)
Rachmaninov piano concerto no.2
Bruckner Symphony No. 4
Bach Air Suite No.3
Blue Danube Waltz

Something different but you might find you like it - Blue Rhapsody by Gershwin. Al Capone's favorite.

Be careful though, you won't get good quality versions from limewire. If you like soothing music, I'd also look into medieval music yes you might think, what do I want to listen to religious latin music for. But some of it is suprisingly relaxing and enjoyable. If you'd like to look more into it, youtube these and see if you like something:
gregorian chant, leonin, perotin, Hildegard of Bingen

YouTube Video

hope ive helped! enjoy! also, good sound system is crucial for enjoying classical music. so if you really get into it, i'd suggest a good pair of audiophile headphones.

May want to look into Carl Orff. I enjoy most of his work.

My 3 favourite classical CDs at the moment:
Bach - Brandenburg concertos. A set of 6 concertos for a mix of instruments. Make sure you get a good recording - I've heard some truly awful attempts at playing these. Anything on 'authentic' instruments is likely to be good. The same goes for any baroque music.
Dufay - Missa L'homme Armee - 15th century unaccompanied choral music. Truly brilliant.
Vaughan Williams - Symphony No. 3. Or just about anything else he wrote. Might not be to everyone's taste though.

If you're looking for more stuff like Pachabel, perhaps try Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues.

Good topic!

My long-time favorite is Handel's "The Music for the Royal Fireworks - Amaryllis Suite - Suite from The Water Music"

There have been many conductors and orchestra's that have performed Handel's "Fireworks" but in my honest opinion, none do it better than Yehudi Menuhin conducting the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. You can sense the testosterone with this combination!

Listen to Classic FM, Classics at 6 is a great show for those wanting to get in to classical music. Then download the music you like from itunes etc, the listings for the songs are shown on the classicfm website.

I'm a violinist, so yeah I know a good bit of classical music. It's not my favorite, but on occasion nothing's better.
