Bumping this thread, I listen a lot of classical music too. My favourite composers are: Wagner, Strauss, Schubert, Bach, Tschaikowsky.
My favourite pieces which I recommend: Wagner - Das Rheingold (first part of the opera Der Ring des Nibelungen) Wagner - Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg Strauss - Also Sprach Zarathustra Strauss - Eine Alpensinfonie Tschaikowsky - Piano Concerto No. 1 Schubert - Symphonie Nr. 8 Bach - Brandenburgische Konzerte (was mentioned before) Gustav Holst - The Planets It was mentioned before, but it's really important which version from which conductor you buy. Great classical pieces can be bad when not played right. My favourite conductors are Herbert von Karajan and Karl Bohm. |

Get listening to some Shostakovitch/Tchaikovsky/Mahler. They can be slightly more powerful than you would expect, "classical", music to be.
As a brass player I may be slightly biased in my choices though. | ||||||||||||
