Wish to have your faith restored in people of The United States? Watch the people lining the roads along the procession.
Killed in action the week before, the body of Sergeant First Class John C. Beale was returned to Falcon Field in Peachtree City, Georgia, just south of Atlanta, on June 11, 2009. The Henry County Police Department escorted the procession to the funeral home in McDonough, Georgia. A simple notice in local papers indicated the road route to be taken and the approximate time. As a soldier, it's reassuring to see stuff like this, it makes you feel appreciated. It also gives the deceased a fitting welcome home.
We have a similar thing going on in the UK for repatriations of UK troops making their last trip home. Wootton Bassett is a small town just outside of the RAF base that the aircraft fly into. These brief 'ceremonies' are simply a way for local people and serving personnel to show respect and support to the fallen and their families. They are not intended as a grief circus for all-comers.
I'll not deny that every time I see this on the news it gets quite dusty. I dunno what it is, having buried mates in the past in uniform. I think it's more to do with seeing the public (instead of the usual Army brass) saying thankyou to those guys who gave up their lives more than the actual death of the soldier(s). | |||

Very true, it's not the processions, it's the gathering crowds paying respect that gets me. These people are not part of any organization, nor are they asked to do this. They see a tiny blurb (thanks to media) burried on page 6 and come on their own accord. Most not knowing if anyone else will be there. I choke up on the salutes or hand over the hearts everytime, because I know what their saying without a single word.
