Blizzard Finally Response: “SC2′s Lan Is No Big Deal” @ NotCliche

Quote:
However, there are always the case of LAN parties. You know, getting together and have some massive LAN gaming, instead of trying to connect to the internet. Pardo knows this, and he had said that these are legitimate issues that is going to be addressed over time. While there is no real word on how the whole thing would work, he had mentioned that it might be possible that the new Battle.NET service would be able to detect your connection and determine if you’re close to each other. If you are close to one another, it’s might be possible to set up a peer-to-peer game.
I think that they will try to do whats best, within reason. They arent stupid, but they are businessmen. No LAN in a way makes sense for them, but I believe they also know what a downer this can be for things like LAN parties, as seen in the above quote...

Steam has OFFLINE mode capabilities, and while its a pain in the butt, at least its there. It just needs to now and again check online to update your registry/make sure its not all hacked up and crap. To me, thats a possible alternative. It keeps pirating at bay by requiring you to go online and update/check the install, but also allows one to get possible 2-3 weeks of offline/LAN play before needing to rehook up to battlenet2.0 and getting checked again. That could be a possible set-up. Would be nice.

Star Craft II | LAN Compatibility | Geekosystem

Not official but still a reference by Blizzard to the functionality.

A p2p connection that still requires internet to be made doesnt sounds like a valid LAN if you ask me.

Yeah, agreed. We're not going to see the kind of LAN that the original SC was made popular by

Yes it seems to be another letdown of another game series... First Red Alert. Then Alien Vs Predator, Resistance 2.. Command and Conquer. I do hope now they dont even bother making a Warcraft 4.. If they carry on like this it'll be unplayable.

I actually like the game. Very cool missions, cool upgrades and gameplay. Just finished the mission on the lava planet, and that was awezome i dont know why some people dont like the game.. there is nothing wrong with it.

The game is great no doubt. But the multiplayer b.net 2.0 system kinda sucks...
