Does anyone know how a foreigner would go about joining the US armed forces? Apply to them first, then they handle your visa, or do you need a visa first?

Army is a good deal. You want hardcore you can find it in the Army.

How ever Marines are Marines, and with being Marines it seems that those who dream of the EGA will suffer for nothing less. They will be Marines, or forever wish at some level that they were Marines.

How ever I am DEP status with the Army. Because I don't care much for the EGA. I respect Marines as much as I respect the Army.

Both are fine fighting forces, spare one is wearing a lime green excuse for concealment.

I would surely give a look at the Army. They have a lot of jobs. If you have two or more years of college you can apply for a Warrant Officer packet. Pilot school sound fun much?? With 4 years or more you can go to OCS and become a 2nd Lieutenant.

I am going in as enlisted. I signed up as a 19D "Cav Scout" for slimier reasons as stated by Okita. It's a life experience. It's going to be rough. I am ready to accept that.

Just make sure w/e you sign up for, you know well what your getting into. Shoot for nothing less than what you want to do. You are probably going to be out of luck getting in touch with a recruiter in Japan.

By the way, the new "recruit a friend" program for the Army is fantastic. A very good friend of mine wanted to join ever since we were kids. I signed him up under me. I get a two grand bonus once he grads basic and I'm going to be E-3 going in thanks to this program. It's a GOOD Deal

Epim3theus, for me this isn't about doing it for my career or whatever, but I simply don't want to grow up, get some management job and grow old thinking "what if...". It's kinda weird and something I'm not really good at explaining, but basically, I want to know what it's like to be in the army and to, well, you know, fight. That's why I'm not really interested in becoming an officer, atleast not straight away. If I like it and want to make it my career, fine, so be it, but I don't really intend to stay in the military until I retire. Also, if the point is to see actual combat...the Belgian army probably isn't my best bet. Besides, the US armed forces get way cooler toys.

Cool, i understand the idea and i think there a lot of people at least here that have had the same sentiments so to say, or can relate to that.
Anyways, like Begbie mentioned, wouldn't the FFL be an option.

If you can read this the bitch fell off.

and if you dont study, they´ll beat it into you!

Marines are cool, i go to college with some but they do not mess around during PT. so being hella fit is a must, or youll get hairline stress fractures in your back and bones. my buddy kyle whos been a marine almost a year now said, that he seen ppl during boot just fall down cuz they werent physically prepared. AND you will get yelled at alot too! not so much in the army, but the marines will yell at you alot to make you stop flinching

2nd LT, 1st LT and Captian are fieldofficers, so yes you will most likely work in the field with other marines for about 8-10 years. if you make major in your mid 30´s you might become a desk jockey for awile, but hey.. who knows. if you have any special skill or degree then who knows, you could also qualify as a marine aviator, flying f18, harriers, and choppers.

army is also cool and has many jobs.

as somebody previously posted, ppl with foreign language skills are very usefull too.

also check the airforce out. they have the best standarts in the military and take extra super care of their airmen. they do not let idiots in and have high qualification standtards. they always get the best housing, workstation, pay and more benefits. maybe they´ll let you fly too.

officers in general get awsome retirement benefits, but ppl who do it mostly dont do it for the money. leading men into battle is no small thing , and when shit hits the fan everybody will look to you for answers.

so go check with recruiters, get alot of info, and contact ROTC which is important. and choose wisely.

Not sure how much he is around these forums nowadays, but Kenwayy is a 19D for a few more weeks. Might want to contact him.

Only one year left, ROTC isnt an option.

Gonna go to a recruiter and an officer recruiter[whatever they are called] once I get back to the States

Sorry, tired... been chasing down a drunk friend through Tokyo watching after him...
[whenever my friends challenge me to chug beer for beer, I KNOW they will end up screwed. I might be thin, but for some reason, my liver just cuts through alcohol like butter. My friend of the same weight/height was royally f***** by the time we boarded our trains]

Set on Marines though, so other branches are almost not worth mentioning
BUT, thanks for the responses, and I really do appreciate it all

Officer seems like the best way to go, and would make the most of my time in service. And if I happen to love serving, Im already on my way to a career in it, right?
