The work of Royal Navy photographers, professional and amateur alike, was centre stage at Portsmouth's Historic Dockyard yesterday for the annual Peregrine Trophy competition.

The award ceremony, which took place yesterday, Monday 15 June 2009, saw the announcement of the winning entries and recognised the talent and creative ability of Navy photographers as well as highlighting the operational activities of the Service.

On display were images taken on operations all over the world by Navy personnel including those of the winner of the Photographer of the Year Award, Leading Airman Owen King, and Peregrine Trophy winners 42 Commando Royal Marines.

On winning his award, Leading Airman Owen King said:

"I'm immensely pleased to have won. I wanted photographs which were punchy - looked a little bit different - and I was lucky enough to deploy with HMS Kent to the Far East last year which was the best opportunity I've had in the Navy!"

The First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Jonathon Band GCB ADC, who presented the awards, said:

"I must applaud the judges who not only picked photographs which are technically correct but by chance picked images which are very relevant to operations this year - whether that be images of Fly Navy 100, or the fantastic actions of the Royal Marines in Afghanistan.

"The photographic branch has brought some really powerful images into the public eye; the photograph of the young marine walking across the parade pround to receive his medal is an iconic image which people will see for years."

Head of Defence Public Relations for the Royal Navy, Captain Davis-Marks, said:

"I'm delighted to see that the standard of imagery in this year's competition is as high as ever. A photograph is often the best way to get your message across; these evocative and challenging pictures of what we do are a fantastic example of this, and I hope an inspiration to all who see them."

The Peregrine Trophy competition dates back to 1963 and is named after HMS Peregrine - a defunct Royal Naval Air Station in Sussex which hosted the first competition.

The award's primary purpose is to encourage the production of eye-catching images for naval public relations use. It is open to all Royal Navy photographers and this year has seen nearly 560 entries from all aspects of naval life, ranging from the operational theatres of Afghanistan and Iraq to our latest warships patrolling the oceans of the world.
