Default Risk an early death, just do nothing.

The UK government has just launched a lazy and stereotypical attack on the games industry. The Department of Health’s Change4Life ads show a young boy holding a PlayStation 3 controller under the headline “Risk an early death, just do nothing.” ( Government attacks 'deadly' games | Gaming Industry | News by MCV)

Never mind that the games industry is one of Britain's strongest creative sectors

Never mind that it employs 22,000 directly (just in development and publishing) and ranks 4th in the world by revenues.

Never mind that government's own research states "there is a lack of conclusive evidence" about the impact of technology in general on obesity.

They just went ahead and ran a campaign showing a boy holding a PS3 controller under the banner "Risk an early death, do nothing"

Under the heading "It's time to fight back" MCV deputy editor Tim Ingham has issued a call to arms. (It's time 2 fight back | Gaming | Opinion and Analysis by MCV).

If you think that lazy stereotyping holds back gaming ( a past-time enjoyed by 59% of Britons aged 6-65), join this group. It's time to stand up and be counted.

*sigh*
Another standard 'I believe it's this, because it's new and obesity's new so...y'know...it's obvious...whatever any evidence (or lack thereof) proves' campaign.

Fail.

But seriously, while too much gaming is obviously a problem, welcome to the 21st century of entertainment.

People are stuck in offices on computers probably more than gamers play (except a few people).

Gaming doesn´t = "obese". A bad balance does, or maybe thats just how you are. It better than a load of other things I can think of.

Very silly. Very silly indeed.

Don't these people realise that if we all die early the pensions crisis will be solved?

The key to modernising any weapon is covering them in glue and tossing them in a barrel of M1913 rails until they look "Modern" enough.

Why is that child not playing PR?!

Following on from this:

Sony May Sue Over PlayStation Controller in "Early Death" Ad

March 9, 2009

At this point, British government health campaign Change4Life probably wishes it had gone in a different direction with its most recent ad campaign.
As has been widely reported, the ad, which visually links playing video games with an early death, has generated official complaints to the U.K.'s Advertising Standards Authority by British game development group Tiga and game business website MCV.
Now, reports MCV, Sony Europe is considering the filing of a lawsuit over the ad's unauthorized use of what appears to be a PlayStation controller:
A source close to Sony revealed to MCV that the agency behind the ad, The Gate, had not contacted the platform holder to ask about using a controller that bears a close likeness to PlayStation's pad.

The ad forms part of the Government’s Change4Life Campaign, and was created by agency The Gate in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK and Diabetes UK.
