As far as laws, a lot depends on your local laws. You should ask at a repitible gun shop, or check with the police dept.

Two of my favs. I have shot in the past is the Glock19 and a SIG .40 cal. (don't remember the model, as it was a friends). Both were very easy to shoot well, and pretty compact.

I have shot the Sig Sauer P228, a Glock 17L, and a Beretta 92FS, all in 9mm.
All were shot at at circular target at 10m distance and then at 25m.
Recoil for all guns was nice and manageable, even for a complete beginner like me, due to the "weak" (but still very deadly) calibre. About 150 rounds (~10 mags each, depending on mag capacity) were fired with each weapon.

As I live in peaceful Europe, where I don't have to fear for my life (come on, allow me some sarcasm...), I have had the chance to fire them only twice, in gun-friendly Switzerland.
So here's my non-gun-nut, noob account of the three pistols:

Beretta 92FS: at 10m I could not hit the middle of the target very often, but most rounds landed somewhere on it, with a propensity to hit below the middle (bad weapon handling no doubt, so I cannot blame the gun). At 25m, I could not hit shit to be honest: maybe 25% of my rounds hit the target SOMEWHERE, but the other 75% went God knows where.
--> Not a beginner-friendly gun. It looks beautiful, it felt okay, but I couldn't hit anything with it. Additionally, recoil was not too bad but with the stock sights it took me longer to aim after each shot than with the other guns.

Sig Sauer P228: at 10m, I achieved very good results, with most of my rounds hitting the middle of the target or very near. At 25m, again no doubt due to my noobishness, only about 50% of my rounds hit the target itself, but at least they were mostly in the middle again.
--> NICE gun. Felt fantastic in my hand, it's really handy and compact, and it enabled me to achive much much better results than the Beretta even though it's much smaller/shorter.
Nice, short, "pleasant" recoil. It just felt so damn..."intuitive" to shoot the P228.

Glock 17L: at 10m, I achieved very very good results, with the majority of my rounds hitting the target smack in the middle, and pretty much ALL of them hitting the target at least near the middle. Even at 25m, I had surprisingly good results, but they were limited but my experience and difficulty of actually seeing the exact middle of the target more than anything else. I'd guess I hit the target 70-75% of the time with this gun at 25 metres.
--> Wow, this gun is a great enabler. Notice that this version, with the "L" in its name, has a LONG barrel and is really made for target practice. The Glock 17, without the L, as you most probably know is what many police officers in the US use as their duty weapon. Imagine the same reliable, easy to use weapon with a longer barrel to enable inexperienced shooters to have a very high, repeated hit probability. Not exactly a pretty weapon, as most Glock users will admit, but DAMN it shoots well. If *I* can hit a target at different ranges in quick succession, then imagine what a more experienced shooter can achieve! Recoil was very manageable, even though the slide is longer than on the other pistols, and the lovely glock sights were easily the best (=easiest to use and achive nice results with) stock sights in this 9mm trio.

Overall, if I ever were to buy a gun (I hope I will never have to), I would probably go for some kind of Glock variant. I have heard wonderful things about Heckler & Koch products like the (in)famous USP family, too. Never had the chance to test those, though, so in my humble opinion GLOCK is the shit.

Try many different models from different producers, get a feel for what model family suits you and your hand the best (Glocks grips are bit strange I must admit, and out of the 3 I actually preferred how the P228 felt), then go deeper by researching what calibre you want, and choose the exact model you want accordingly.

I just hope you will never, ever have to actually use the weapon you want to purchase against another human being. Grizzly bears, dingoes/coyotes/the annoying neighbour's Rottweiler are all cool, but please, please just actively AVOID any kind of situation where you might actually want a firearm in the first place. I know things are different where you live, and given the fact that pretty much every person who might mean you harm can actually get their hands on a gun, you will want to be able to respond in kind, but please just THINK about what you can do to prevent shit like that from happening: move to another neighbourhood/city/state, don't piss of gang members, don't tell anybody what you/your family have in terms of valuables etc..

Except for the last paragraph, which I found obvious (maybe it is just uncommon sense, heh), this was very informative, so thank you.

I knew you were going to say that, but I had to say it, for the sake of my own conscience
And please don't get me wrong, I did not mean to disrespect - things are just different where you live, and that's okay.

Edit: you're welcome

Well, the goal isn't to go out looking for people to shoot. We have a name for people who do that: murderers. Those who get caught will usually end up either imprisoned for much/all of their life or executed. The point of having a gun is to help keep yourself from becoming a victim to the next mugger/murderer/home invader (although I've heard home invasions are less common because they're afraid of getting shot by the homeowner; usually burgulars tend to look for empty houses to rob).

ORLY?

I was merely telling the OP something akin to:"Be safe, man - e.g. if you don't feel safe where you live, move away."

This clearly needs a lock, there have been a shed load of threads about the same thing in the past, and they've all ended up talking about guns laws, and people discussing whether carrying a weapon is stupid or not, which then turns into a flame war.

(Sometimes I maybe have too little faith in some posters! )
