Google's your best start, generally it doesn't matter too much on the 3d application, more understanding the general principle then applying it to what ever package that your going to use,

You tube can be a good start point, watch what other people are doing.

Figure out what type of modeling you want to do, gaming, VR, architecture, HRDI. animation. All have different requirements.

Find good forum that your going to be modeling on 3dmax, maya, rhino, zbrush, lightwave. Read what others have asking before.

Be prepared to lose a lot of hours, any 3d stuff as it can chew up time like your would not believe. Keep a diary of problems, you be amaze how sometimes your have the same error occur.

Save, Save and Save again, version is a good idea. losing an hours work is annoying but to lose a couple of days is heartbreaking.

If your going to model something having it on your desk can help out lots. Just having a model of it can explain a great deal of how to model in 3d.

good reference will help you out lots.

here's my favorite blueprint The-Blueprints.com - The Blueprints, Reference Image Database, 26000 blueprints online

When learning start with things that you want to model, learn your tools that will help lots.

3 x 22" samsung 226bw. Matrox triplehead Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz (1066FSB) OC 3.2 , 8gb's of 1066mhz ram. 9800GTX OCX. 520mb. 3 x 320gbs samsungs. raid 0

I've been working in max back when it was in DOS only (3D Studio DOS 4 1994). And I'm still learning things I didn't know about. Then getting into game design is totally different list of rules and methods.

All you can really do is use the tutorials that came with it...if you don't have those then try Google. There are allot, I mean allot of tutorials out there. Its the only way to learn. Practice, practice, practice.

Check out the 1950's bus tutorial on this page ( Its in 3 parts )

Its very easy to follow as it covers every step, and it makes no assumptions about you having any prior knowledge ( I found most tuts expect you to know the basics already )

3DS MAX Tutorials (..Mercedes..)

I didn't actually make the bus, but all the techniques were transferable to the helicopter I was making.

PS - dont give up - the first 20-30 hours are HARD!!! but then youll see the light and it gets whole lot easier.
