Re: Question of Donation

As far as the security issue goes, I'm not entirely sure. However this really wouldn't concern me for two reasons.

The civilian internet we use now is not monitored. They say it is, but I know they guys who would be in charge of such a thing, and they just laughed. Secondly, the signal routes or is run by 2 countries which aren't exactly friendly to the US as is, so transferring that to an American company would only be an improvement.

Next, we can already buy our own internet. I got this idea after seeing a satellite on top of a b-hut and asking. Something like 15 guys had gone in on a slighter bigger system than I proposed. The soldiers run/fix it. We are already doing what I am proposing, I am just asking if a charity was setup, whose sole use of donations would be to provide such a system, would you donate too it. It would provide the knowledge that no matter what your money would be put to good use for something all soldiers/marines want, as opposed to many organizations that mean well, but ultimately don't get what the soldiers want.

Beer and hookers is always appreciated, but the whole general order numba 1 thing.

The military network, which the military provides/pays for/etc is censored for two reasons. One, the 'public' reason is security. The ACTUAL reason is bandwidth. There is only so much of it and you don't want a critical message getting lost because someone was dling the latest episode of hero's.

So I did the same to the lads posted this year >

Re: Question of Donation

I'd donate, if I knew the service was going to yourself and your guys, K. Probably not to a generalised state-side charity, when there are other causes closer to home I support/would like to support.

It's a good idea but I don't consider it donation worthy. Too much crap involved and it would turn into a for profit operation which defeats the purpose of donations.

Jeez, you'd think the American Red Cross would have jumped on this kind of thing already. If you come up with a plan, I would suggest submitting it to them after a proof of concept. Setting up a non-profit can be tough, but building a capability into an existing one that already helps troops with communications home might be easier.
