Buying new screen?

I´ve been thinking about buying a new 24" flatscreen but i need advise
on what to look for.

What does the different speccs actually mean when comparing screens?
ex: 10000:1 vs 20000:1
360 cd/m2 vs 300 cd/m2
2ms vs 5ms

Or could i just buy the cheapest screen i can find and still get a good screen for gaming.

Any advise or thoughts are welcome.

Know ingame as 32cap
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000+ 3.2GHz, XFX GeForce 9800GTX+ 765M 512MB, Corsair TWIN2X 6400C4 DDR2, 2048MB CL4,Samsung SpinPoint T166 500GB SATA2,Eizo 19" LCD

Re: Buying new screen?

I personally think 24+ for a computer screen is overkill, afterall you sit pretty close to the screen.

I'm very pleased with my 22" samsung

Im gonna have to disagree with you, 24" is pretty win. As for what me go for it? pretty much from my day or so of research it looked like a good monitor, plus it looks cool :P

22" = 1680 x 1050 < 24" = 1920 x 1200

'nuff said.

I'm a happy owner of a Samsung 2493HM, same contrast as the T240 but better picture brightness and better stand, it also has a pair of built in speakers producing a whooping 2 watts of awesome sonic power! They are so great that I haven't even tried mine out yet...

Anyways, the 2493HM and T240 are pretty much the same screen except for the picture brightness, view angle and look and they cost about the same too.

Once you go 24" you never go back, I had an 21" monitor before which I though was huge compared to my other 19" monitors, Now I laugh whenever I see an 21". (And cry whenever I get to work. Damn 19" monitors, atleast I have 2 of 'em)

Re: Buying new screen?

One thing is that it displays in 16:9 instead of 16:10
16:9 is 1920 x 1080 commonly found on TVs and 16:10 is 1920 x 1200 which is more common on computer displays, obviously 16:10 is better since it bigger.

Taken from that site.

The 10% that Completes Your Visual Enjoyment!

BenQ offers you with the most true-to-life images with its world-leading 16:9 LCD monitor, satisfying your every visual sensation with the truest images and putting you in the lead in the digital world.

When a traditional 16:10 LCD monitor handles 16:9 signals in generating Full HD image, there are usually two ways to get it done. The first way would be to stretch the image which results in picture distortions. Another way would be to cover up the surplus image using horizontal black bars. Either way - stretching the image by 10% or covering 10% of the image - would cause a seriously impact to quality of your visual entertainment.

BenQ’s full line up of Full HD 16:9 LCD monitors, on the other hand, offer dot-to-dot Full HD image transmission to solve the problems created by traditional 16:10 LCD monitors. Now, you can finally enjoy the 100% Full HD performance you’ve been waiting for!
Wth are they on about? 16:9 better then 16:10 since it can display HD movies without black bars?

So instead of covering 10% of the image with black bars they fixed it by removing 10% of the screen, Giving the exact same physical screen size while watching movies as a 16:10 screen but you'll have to live with the smaller screen size while doing everything else.

Its like taking a saw and cutting those black bars of my 16:10 screen thus making the screen smaller and then calling it better.

They are obviously trying to sell this to people who have no clue that "full HD" is worse than 1920x1200.

Ohff! i dodged a bullet then.
Thanks Cp.
Obviosly 1920x1200 would be better than 1920x1080.

Re: Buying new screen?

The specs you asked about:

10000:1 vs 20000:1 Contrast ratio. There is no set standard, so companies can say what they want here. Not really that great of a measure, except maybe within the same brand name, like between 2 samsung models

360 cd/m2 vs 300 cd/m2 This is brightness. Kind of higher the better as a rule, but anything over 300 should be good.

2ms vs 5ms Response time. Not really a set standard so not really accurate. Any model from the last year should be good to go, but older ones with like a 10ms or higher response might cause ghosting in a fast FPS. Get something between 2ms and 8ms.
