first of all what platform do you use (mac or PC) Because most of the best software is for Mac.
Good Software for PC: - Sonar, Cubase.
Good Software for Mac:- Logic 8, Cubase, Pro Tools etc...

Composing sound bites you will need a MIDI Keyboard and a MIDI interface so you can link the Keyboard to the computer either by a MIDI (sound) card or by USB (cheaper, but just as good).

Go to Home: Sound On Sound music recording technology magazine to find out more.

There are places that sell midi/audio interfaces like the TASCAM-US 122L and it comes free with Cubase LE.

At the end of the day it is up to you, and for you to look around for the best deals.

Any questions just PM me.

Army Musician covered it all really. Just be willing to learn how to use MIDI efficiently if you're going to be composing in the box.

I can really recommend Cubase its easy to learn and you can do anything you want with it.
