Yet Another GFX Card Advice Thread

After using this 8600GT for over a year, I've been looking into an ATI upgrade in the $100-$120 price range. What's the best ATI card that fits both PR and Vista well, and what are the side effects of switching from Nvidia to ATI, if any?

Specifications
AMD Athlon 64 x2 5000+ (2.6GHz)
3GB RAM
Nvidia 8600GT (512mb?)

Thought the mountains would crumble and the rivers would bend,
But I thought it all wrong and the world did not end.

Welcome, 2009!

I presume you mean aussie dollars? If so then your budget is too small - $120 is about the price of an 8600GT that youve got now. Also do you really need to upgrade? If you just play PR then an 8600GT should do fine ( I had one very recently )

The best one to upgrade to atm is the Ati HD 4850 - works great with PR and Vista, and it looks like Ati have got their act together on the driver side of things now. Thing is that youll have to double your budget to get one.

Aussie dollars? Absolutely not. Think USD - my alter ego lives in Montserrat.

lol - sorry I just gave it a quick glance and thought it was an aussie flag, and montserrat was some little town there

Anyway even in US dollars, you'll have to increase your budget a bit to about $180

As long as you remove all the Nvidia's drivers (Driver Cleaner) there aren't any

Turn 360 degrees and walk away is what you should do tbh.

Having myself replaced an nvidia card for an ati one, I will never go ati again.

I have used both ATI and Nvidia and both have been great. In fact i think in general the ATI cards i have owned have produced better looking graphics, crisper and clearer.

Actually, you can get the 4850 as low as about $139.
Newegg.com - Radeon HD 4850, Radeon HD 4000 series, Desktop Graphics / Video Cards, Video Cards & Video Devices, Computer Hardware

And yes, that is the card you should get.
