Scenarios for a modern round of wargaming

I have a few friends who usually play wargaming using WW2 stuff which is very fun, but we are going to try some modern stuff sometime early next year.
What kind of factions or countries would you think would make for a good scenario or a fun game? Almost like a what if WW3 kind of thing. I know this is even off topic for this section, but plenty of military minded people on these forums.

Sorry this morning when I was in hurry when posted. We use those miniature 6mm models from GHQ on a regular playing board with lot's of detail.

As soon as one side starts losing, everyone dies from a large nuclear explosion.

Resources... Wars are always about resources now matter what the politicians say. Russia has lots of them. If you start turning the screws on the global economy and available resources such as oil, water and food stop flowing, then the gloves come off and countries stop rattling their sabres and start waging war. Darfur is an example of conflicting interests colliding because of dwindling resources. You could consider any two parties that might be at odds because of resources. If the screws are turned tightly enough, the possibilities for conflict are nearly limitless.
