Need help building a quiet pc.

I'm trying to build my friend a quiet pc, not really sure what to get for
Motherboard
Case
Video card

This will not be overclocked. I need recommendations for these. Video card, preferably one not too loud. No price limit on case, as long as it is quiet. Don't need an expensive motherboard, just a quality one within $80-$140

For CPU/RAM i was looking at this
I was thinking
Intel E8400
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115037
2Gb G.Skill
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231098
He won't be running vista so 2gb is enough for him.

Re: Need help building a quiet pc.

Arggh whats with all the computer advice threads ( though I think I started it asking about gfx cards the other day )

Get an Artic cooling pro 7 for the cpu

Ive just got one of these gfx cards:
Palit Radeon HD 4850 Sonic 512MB PCIe wDual Link AE4850S+T352 at TigerDirect.com
Fast, cheap and silent.

Ive got a Antec Sonata case - its very high quality and stylish and has a quiet 500w PSU built in. Ive been using them for years, but a slightly more powerful modular psu with heatpipe cooling might be a better option if I was looking today.

If you get a quality mobo with heat pipe cooling, then you wont need fans on that. Maybe something like a MSI P6N Diamond ( you get a fan, but its optional )

Thats leaves case fans (Antec Sonata case comes with case fan if you buy that one) - just get the biggest you can get, as the larger the diameter, the lower the rpm to move the same amount of air.

My PC, is basically silent, and very overclocked, but the only thing that cost me "extra" for overclocking and low sound is the AC Freezer Pro 7 ($26) - all the other bits I would have bought anyway.
You will never go back to a noisy pc once you've owned a silent one

Yea mines is pretty silent, it's a Coolermaster RC 690, I've got Yate Loon fans with rubber around the edges and I really put my dremel to use cutting out all the fan grills. Its so silent sometimes that I press the power button thinking its off when its really in power savings mode, and then it starts shutting down lol.

I just didn't want to go through all that modding for my friend since he's not paying me.

I LOVE my Antec p182. With the fans on low, and my screensaver that turns my monitors off, I have actually walked in and though the computer was off. So I push the power button, only to have the screens wake up and the computer start the shutdown sequence.

This site is great for help on this subject:

Lots of good reviews and advice. Also, I just saw the p182 on sale a couple days ago for $99 and free shipping at newegg.com. Sale is over now, but it is at $119 with free shipping, which is still below the normal price about $135 with no free shipping.

What do you mean by fans on low, is there a fan speed regulator on the case?

Re: Need help building a quiet pc.

Most modern motherboards come equipped with temperature sensors that can be linked to the speed of your case-fans.

For fans or motherboards without speed settings you can set in the BIOS, you can slow down fans by introducing extra components in-line with the power feed, attach a fan-controller - sometimes with temperature settings.

For most high-end systems, this on-demand temp sensitve setting will not prevent serious GFX card overheat, normally requiring 70-80% values.

If you are going for a passively cooled system the main problem is a choice between case airflow, and potentially noisy fans and chipset/GPU fans.

For a high-ish end gaming PC the only solution really is watercooling, this usally means your casefans can be turned way down, or just to "on-demand" settings.

For general quiet use, using rubber fan-mounts, choosing big slow turning fans compared to lots of small fans is a sensible choice. Make sure the components are in tight, DVD-ROM etc, but not "too" tight. Have a good think about airflow, but never put-up with overly high temperatures just to keep things quiet.

Re: Need help building a quiet pc.

if you have a Asus motherboard *a recent 1 PK5-e Maximus formula etc*, you can use Q-fan in youre BOIS o you can turn down the fan speed and still keep it cool, it works for me, a cording my Asus temp. software the CPU is 30 degrees whit the fans on 800 RPM *stock 2500 rpm*

That's gonna be an outside temperature.

Don't be surprised if the actual core runs more than 20 degrees hotter

Turn 360 degrees and walk away is what you should do tbh.
