General rant about music today.

Firstly, I just wanna say that I wish I was born a couple decades earlier so I could have seen the progression of some decent music and heard it all when it was fresh and new.

I like lots of different forms of music. Rock, Electro, Soul, Funk, D&B, Metal, Punk, Ska, Hip-Hop and have even worked at an awesome Jewish Jazz concert. I sometimes even enjoy a bit of classical music on a relaxing drive home from work on occasions.

The following is only my opinion, I don't care if I get flamed for this or if nobody cares, I just have to get this off my chest.

[Rant] So, Coldplay won a couple of trophies at the Q awards recently, Best album and best act in the world today. This made me laugh my ass off, did I miss something? I think Violet Hill was the first single from their latest album and I must say it's one of the biggest piles of crap I've ever heard. To call them the best act in the world today is a complete piss take out of the human race.

Being at number one in the charts used to be an achievement but to hear what's currently there, 'So What' by Pink is a bit of an abomination. It's almost asif she wrote the lyrics to see if she could make money out of 5 minutes of work. Has anyone actually listened to her lyrics? She may have been ok in the past but this "brand new attitude" must be a joke.

I know it's been like this for some time now but the 'charts' or top 10 simply don't seem to be of any kind of value any more. I know none of my favourite bands will make it into the charts but to me that's a good thing. Just about everything on the radio is starting to make me sick and I can listen to anything from Lamb of God to Björk to Jethro Tull. Has anyone actually bought any music from a shop since they first discovered torrents? If everyone leaves it to the 12 year olds to buy music and decide what's in the 'top 10' then radio and popular music as we know it is going to continue to die. [/Rant]

I've been constantly buying music, but then again It's from small record companies that share my taste in music. But yes I do agree that music is pretty shit lately, at least music that's in general circulation anyway. I mean I wasn't a huge fan of 90s pop or disco either but it seems to be that music on a whole has tanked in the last 9-10 years

I know what you mean though, the 70s to me gave birth to some of my favourite stuff. Sabbath, Pentagram, Cactus, Mountain, Fog Hat, Humble Pie, Zep, Purple, Floyd etc etc. But I enjoy all kinds of stuff, from BB King to Hank Williams III, to Grateful Dead, to Hendrix, to Kyuss, to Mayhem and everything in between, I even like a bit of hip hop. But I think with the bad comes the good. I've found so many bands I never would have found because of things like lastfm. I'm up to my ears in stoner doom, and I've never looked back

All Music today sucks! Every single artist right now has zero to little talent! I mean come on!? You know what? Here let's check the Last 10 played on the Most popular radio station in NYC. Z100 - New York's Hit Music Station

1. Pink - So What
2. Katy Perry - Hot N Cold
3. M.I.A. - Paper Planes
4. Ne-yo - Closer
5. Miley Cyrus - See You Again
6. Beyonce - If I Were A Boy
7. David Archuleta - Crush
8. Shontelle - T-shirt
9. Christina Aguilera - Keeps Gettin' Better
10. Jonas Brothers - Lovebug

All of these songs suck! To who does this count as Music?

1. As you said.
2. Boring and repetitive song.
3. I can barely understand what she's saying!
4. God no.
5. Jesus Christ i hate Cyrus.
6. You were relevant 10 years ago.
7. Boring.
8. Ear rape!
9. She should die!
10. Why!

Sometimes i wish that people were smarter and less egotistical. Meaning less prone to Fads and be more rational and cynical. Fuck! Please someone make another Musical revolution! Bring back Heavy Metal, Psychedelic rock, 80's rap, and Pop stars with talent!

Yeah, i like what warpig mentioned, i Listen to those bands till this day.

But the thing is, all it is is that its just old farts talking. Just like led zep in the day was just outright blasphemy to some people but hey, once again, these guys will be classics one day (which is scary.)

I don't like the way music is going today either.

Biggest change since my birth was probably all the rap/hip-hop. NWA, naughty by nature, snoop, cypress, public enemy, 2pac, biggie, dr. dre were the best of the best in mid 80s to later 80s 90s. I'm not a wanna be gangsta but thats the music of my time, and i really enjoy it. But however if you look at the genre today, you will notice such a drastic change. Beats are different, rappers today rap about clothes, their new dance and how great they look with their shades on. No depth of the olden days. It's a shame people call them self rappers still.

Just like rock, the movement to punk rock upset a lot of people I knew. And the move to emo now is just killer to the punk crowd.

All I'm waiting for now is that very same generation gap. What will make us go "wtf?" when we listen to some god awful new shallow music of tomorrow. It happens to some today but I still somewhat understand music today. No real wtf moment yet.

you are all hilarious, naming the first bands you hear on the radio. if you like music, you should dig deeper than this.

"decent music"? we have a crapload of interesting genres that are constantly boiling and evolving.

jazz fusion
post-rock
post-metal
acid-rock
noise
doom
drone
sludge metal
space rock
psychobilly
experimental/avant garde
math metal
dark ambient
etc etc etc etc

these are genres withing the music i listen to that might not have been that big or that evolved 20 years ago, and they are constantly growing.
i'm sure you have similar subgenres and fusioned styles withing the music you like, cause you are not alone about your opinions. far from it.

the music on radio is for people that don't have a bigger interest in music, and just wants to tap his/her foot to whatever plays with a decent beat and computer-edited voice.

dig deeper.

what i dont understand is how coldplay won any awards at all, and radiohead released in rainbows this year and it doesnt even make a blip on the radar. that was THE only album i can think of that was good this year {and by good i mean spectacular}, its gotten to the point where i see maybe 1 good album a year and its hardly ever from a new band. its sad, really sad.

known in-game as BOOMSNAPP

Re: General rant about music today.

The only talent involved in mainstream music today is that of the producers, engineers and marketers.

I graduated from college for audio engineering and one of my lecturers was an assistant engineer on a Jennifer Lopez album some years ago. He told us that her singing was so pathetic that one of his jobs was to divide all of the vocal takes into separate words that they could use to paste together one "good" take. He said they even had to up cut up syllables from several takes to make up the words that went into the final mix.

That album has sold 7.5 million worldwide...........

James: have I ever told you what a pleasure it is to work with individuals such as yourself, db?

I don't like the way music is going today either.

Speaking as a member of the "current" generation (Currently in High School at the moment) I feel I should get some voice in here, I for one hate the new stuff that is coming out. I hate it with every fiber of my being, they should take most records that are being produced today and go bury the master tracks somewhere in the deserts of New Mexico never to be seen again. But sadly, some people actually enjoy this new "music" that contains mostly the same generic noise that repeats itself over and over and over again.

But I must say, it does not suprise me in the least that the students at my school enjoy this stuff. Everyone wears the same brand of clothes, everyone tries to act the same, everybody is trying to conform with a noncomformist or anarchic attitude and style, and I find it quite funny. Nobody is trying to be there own person anymore! As soon as the first friend in a group of people says, "Hey this song is awsome! They talk about sex and drugs in it therefore it is cool" (Speaking about most pop and "rap" songs here), everyone agrees just so that they can say, "Oh, well I listen to this band, so this makes me hardcore," or "This makes me show that I hate everyone," and so on and so on. It bugs me, a lot.

I listen to classic rock, I love classic rock, Deep Purple, Led Zep, Buffalo Springfield, Creedence Clearwater, the list goes on and on. It's sad, I know only a few people that actually like the stuff I listen to at my school. The rest of them are listening to the newest Akon song, or hell... Even Miley Cyrus. (Honestly, what the hell?) And those songs go out of style faster then anything has before. I love my stuff! It last and I listen to it everyday and I have yet to tire of it! I have a sister, and she listens to this new stuff, but she doesn't exactly listen to it because she likes the music, she listens to it because my parents don't like it. It baffles me! Do something just because our parents don't like it, where the hell did that come from?

I just don't know what to think of it, sorry if I upset anyone who does listen to the genres that I was speaking about, but I just needed to get that off my chest, seeing as how I can't talk to most people about it at my school or at home.
