I can think of tons of bands that push things into new directions and constantly surprise and amaze me. I guess I should have called this topic "General rant about popular music today"

Although I've pointed out that I enjoy many genres of music, Metal is by far may favourite too. As yourself and hiberNative have pointed out, there are many sub-genres out there and that's what I tend to feed off. There must be 100+ different types of metal out there.

@dunehunter, I like a lot of stuff by M.I.A also. We have a specific Pandora station at work called 'Phat Phanny' strictly for female artists that lay down a phat beat with catchy baselines. *dancing emoticon*

But your right, most commercial music suck, becasue they are commercial and packaged to appeal to the masses. If you go slightly out of your way and not listen to mainstream music, you will be amazed at what you can find.

-I think Coldplay is great(Violet Hill is beautiful), it's all a matter of what taste you have. When it comes to the "Top 100" hit lists the problem is that people's alternatives are restricted by what they're exposed to and these sources are limited. MTV is playing mostly crap and they're also exposed to music through clubbing where they play "dance music", aka shit. In turn these performers gain a lot of tabloid press, and soon you're only hearing a limited kind of music, you can't see the forest for all the trees. Music has begun to center around nightlife and empty, fast-paced music is spewed out because all the people are too drunk to actually care, but the music is etched into their brains. If I were to ask the people on this forum who Tom Waits is I'm sure the majority would say "I don't know". People don't bother to look and are content with what they're fed. Now, for some remedy:

EDIT: Basically, you have to actively search if you want to find good music.

Anyone that hates what's on the radio or couldn't care less what is in the charts like me knows that. Anyone that doesn't know who Tom Waits is needs to be educated too.
