I believe it came from World of Warcraft. They released a bunch of South American servers, but none are localized for Portuguese. So a majority of Brazilians all go on one server. And since the game is quite popular, the server became heavily popular with Brazilians, who typically only play amongst themselves(due to a language barrier, English speakers also didn't want to bring them into dungeon runs and all cause they couldn't communicate). And supposedly all the high end English speaking guilds transfered off.
