Censoring the world wide web??

BBC NEWS | Technology | Warning sounded on web's future

I know its not censoring per se but i see it as starting with a labeling system then moving on to something worse, like blocking all those without the proper credentials. Almost like how the media works, we only see what some company decides is good or "correct". Im not one to panic but it would really suck if that did happen.

See the problem im thinking about here?

This really doesn't talk about much more than opening up the internet to a wider group of people. I don't even think censoring appears once in the article.

I dont find the idea that bad...

It is true, the internet is more used to publish rubbish than true information.

Look at all the useless blogs and opinions. Dont get me wrong it is a good thing that everyone has a chance to present his thoughts but this leads to a massive amount of information and disinformation that can not be handled by individuals.

It's the part about rating websites. You start doing that and someone gets it into their head that they should block websites that don't meet requirements and then the whole thing goes downhill from there.

We made it, I can't believe we made it!
Son, we just crossed the street.

The rating systems sounds good to me - Sir Tim Berners Lee is talking more about scientific and academic information rather than a rating system across the whole internet. In the past students would use books in libraries to get their info, and most academic books tend to be pretty accurate, but now the internet is used much more, and as we all know theres alot of crap out there.
This censorship is much more worrying :
Senator saves YouTube from al Qaeda • The Register
Im against supporting terrorists, but who decides who the terrorists are. Hes asked youtube to apply their guidelines, which "forbid graphic or gratuitous violence, and videos that show, someone getting hurt, attacked, or humiliated." Suppose all the jdam and "Team America - f**k yeah" vids will go too?

There is a thing called internet 2, it's been in the works for a decade and it will censor and simply not allow non approved sites to be accessed. It will be what cable tv is, but the internet.

Enjoy reading unpopular opinions freely while you still can.

Yeah thats exactly what i mean. In a couple of decades it shouldnt be a much of a worry seeing as thats when the internet generation will be in charge and we wont mess with it(i hope). But, i can totally see this happen in a couple of years and all these "blame video games for violence" parents and out of touch politicians will let it happen.

I didnt say there is no useful info on the internet but I am sure that the mainpart of internet site is BS.

Of course if you know where to look you will find the right stuff. But many users do not know where to look maybe?

I agree with spacemanc.

Ironcomatose:
Or our generation messes all up because it is so indifferent about voilence and gives a shit about people dieing because we are so used to it seeing it since childhood

It isnt a big suprise that the internet will be censored like TV or cable TV... Why should the internet be something different? Every little kid can view violence, porn etc without any real control.
For me it is clear that sooner or later the internet will be more controlled just as TV. But this will still take a long time - maybe when the 2nd internet generation is in charge and knows how to do it
