For crying out loud, FN Herstal says it IS the same gun only different designation.

In production in Belgium and abroad, the MINIMI™ is a combat proven machine gun, in service on all continents.
Designated M249 SAW by the US Armed Forces, it has demonstrated outstanding reliability in all combat conditions.

Read my quote, damn you.

Quote:
The M249 has an alternative feed system, which allows to use disintegrating metallic belts as a primary feed option, or M16-type box magazines as a back-up feed option. The belt is feed using the top feed unit, the magazines are inserted through the magazine port, located at the left side of the receiver and angled down. The Flip-up dust cover closes the magazine port when it is not in use, serving also as a belt guide. When magazine is in place, this cover raises up and closes the belt-way to avoid dual feeds and jams.
Not to mention, the M249 has a large heatshield over the barrel, unlike the Minimi.

The minimi is the whole gun thingy. The SAW is just a version of the gun, not a whole different gun.

The point is that they're not the same weapons. The Minimi is more of a base weapon, and the M249 SAW is one of its variants.

Just like there are Mk-46 and Mk-48 Mod 0 LMGs, Minimi Paras, and Minimi SPWs.

They are called bipods. They help to stabilize and ground the weapon, which improves the weapon's handling and firing accuracy.
