As far as the psychological part of war, no i dont think it would help at all like everyone here already said. Although the tactical value of playing realistic games in a realistic way is almost unlimited. Thats why a lot of modern militaries are investing in video game technology to replace full scale war games.

You mean psychological, not physiological. I'm hoping.

Re: Easier to handle war when youve been playing war games=
Agree that it improves tactics or at least the tactical mindset, but it wont make me any more happy about getting shot at.
I feel it MIGHT make me at the very least be able to communicate more effectively and be a bit more 'fluent' as far as that communication goes or something, but aside from the mannerisms, digging holes, and thinking a bit more tactically, no. It doesnt help you. And even as far as tactics... nothing is like real life, so your tactics you learned in PR would only go so far as to at least THINKING about flanking, etc And NO, Im pretty sure bunny hopping and prone spamming are not viable tactics i real life Id poop my pants if I got the suppression effect while being forced to walk across the street while out of sprint in real life |

I don't really think it would help enough to make any real difference. You may learn a few things that could very rarely ever be used IRL.
BUT, I know for a fact that Racing games can help a little. Playing games with a steering wheel and pedals helped me a very small amount for the Drifting that I do now IRL. |

Re: Easier to handle war when youve been playing war games=
It improves the chances of people being less likely to be physically hurt? Rubbish. Up against IEDs, it's pretty much pure luck plus 100% dedicated observation and knowing the telltale signs. You will learn this as a soldier, you won't in a game.
Tactics, mmm. To a very limited extent, games may be helpful. Although carrying the kit and dealing with comms and using it is different than clicking a mouse. Maybe it provides a small insight, but nothing more imo. I already deal with recruits (and soldiers) who compare things that we do with BF2...strange but true. Psychologically, people may be 'accustomed' to seeing certain things in a digital sense (like blood). But nothing, including de-sensitisation from the likes of orgrish, will prepare someone for the sensory inputs from real-world war and death. Like hearing (you don't hear babies screaming and crying in games, do you?), and smell (this is a big one). Touch (how does dealing with your mate's blown off limb grab you?). Dealing with it is different to every soldier, and anyone can succumb to PTSD for example. Treating it like a game is removing yourself even more so from the reality of it. Humour is how most have dealt with it, and just getting on with things. But playing a game will never ever keep you safer physically, unless you're playing a game so long that it means you miss the bus to Afghanistan |

Re: Easier to handle war when youve been playing war games=
games can teach a guy to shoot a gun, reload and how to use sights but reduce the chances of getting hurt? bullshit.
now my only experience is 4 years of airsofting but it is always entertaining to see first-timers rent a gun, never bother listening to the instructors as they know how to reload and act tacticool then charge off and get nailed within the first 3 mins of the match. games do the exact opposite, makes them overconfident and far less aware to the fact that they often wont see the guy that shot them because they enemy now makes an effort to conceal himself. in fact many female players often last much longer in the first few games than the guys simply because fewer of them play fps and are thus much more careful about what they do. |
